New York City to close Rikers Island

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday vowed to shutter Rikers Island and replace it with “at least a few new facilities” to lock up jailbirds elsewhere in the city.

“New York City will close the Rikers Island jail facility,” de Blasio said during a City Hall news conference.

“It will take many years, it will take many tough decisions along the way. But it will happen.”

But de Blasio stopped short of adopting the recommendations in a draft report from a blue-ribbon panel headed by former New York state Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman.

That plan calls for building a new jail in each of the city’s five boroughs at a total estimated cost of $10.6 billion.

“I’m working from a neutral position of saying I only know this: We will need a few more facilities,” de Blasio said.

“There’s no assumption on the number or location or how many.”

De Blasio last year publicly rejected calls to close Rikers, calling it a “noble concept” but saying “it would cost many billions of dollars — and I have to look out for what’s feasible, and I have to look out for the taxpayer.”

A draft version of Lippman’s report obtained by The Post recommends reducing the Rikers population — now around 10,000 — by about half and replacing the violence-plagued correction complex with five new jails spread across the city.

Good luck finding sites that will accept the new prisons. Litigation will take years.

Have them build it. The Constitution does not forbid slave labor as a criminal punishment.................

Hmm. I wonder what they have planned for Rikers when there’s no more correction facilities there?

One possibility: a big casino.

Wasn’t it ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK where a wall was built around New York making it a prison.

Maybe someone should suggest that to the mayor.

Some logic of the late Marion Barry, Washington DC Mayor ‘for life’::

“We can’t shut down Lorton (prison in VA about 20 miles from DC) cause for some it is the only opportunity to get out of their neighborhood”.

“At least in Lorton they have a bed, 3 meals a day and TV”

“After you get over the murders, D.C. is really a safe place!”

Eddie, I miss you more than all the others. And I salute you, brother!!

Being a Midwesterner, Jim Carroll provided me with my only frame of reference for Rikers..

So, Komerade Wilhelm wants to build more jails to incarcerate ever more disadvantaged young men of color. Just imagine if an evil conservative suggested that. It’s a good thing there is no longer any semblance of a “free press” in this society.....

HA! They’re going to close Rikers?! Where are all criminals going to go then? My guess would be the street corners. Just like where all the mentally ill went when they closed Willowbrook.

The mayor and his rebranded “Tamany Hall’ cronies must have their eyes on some prime waterfront realestate to be picked up for pennies on the dollar

Yep.

That pubbie governor they had wanted to build emergency gas-fired generator stations spread across 20 NYC neighborhoods after that last big regional power outage.

The NIMNH crowds wouldn't hear of it.

Make them walk across the US along abandoned railroad tracks. Chain them to a makeshift car wrapped around the track. Put food/water 25 miles apart. They can discover this beautiful country. A good 3-4 month sentence.

Why do politicians always seem to need a ‘Blue Ribbon Panel’ to make decisions?

De Blasio is far from the only one.

Can’t they reason and think for themselves?

Maybe Boston Dynamics can create a robot politician to sit in office for decades like a lot in Congress already do. It can’t be any worse.
