Trivia question for Watergate buffs out there. Did this really happen? Did President Nixon really shove Ron Ziegler? I tried verifying this online but there is no video of it. There are a couple of websites that claim to have the video but I have to pay a licensing fee of some sort to download it.
No collar grab. Nixon just turns him around.
Yes, but you have to pay for it in order to see it. Isn’t that weird? I couldn’t even pull this up on YouTube. And you can get anything on YouTube from Shirley Temple singing about animal crackers in her soup to a full Talking Heads concert from 1980.
I was able to watch it without having to pay, but only once.
They use cookies to prevent multiple viewings, apparently.
I, too, remember seeing the shove.
Why? What are you trying to find out?
Videos are edited. They may be out of context. It tells you nothing
No, I’ve been watching it repeatedly, no payment required.
There must be more than one video out there, or there used to be. The one I’m familiar with is from a totally different angle.
Never grabbed him by the collar - did give him a mild shove on the arm as though to say “go on out there and say something” - whatever it was, Ziegler didn’t hold it against Nixon - show on C-Span tonight had a bunch of Nixon’s people talking about his post-presidency, and they mentioned that Ziegler had talked to Nixon many times after he left the office - in fact, Ziegler’s wife and grand-daughter were in the audience and called on to take a bow.....
Alexander Butterfield had informed the Senate committee of the existence of an audio tape-recording system that covered the entire White House on July 16, 1973; this was 35 days earlier.
At this point, Nixon probably knew it was only a matter of time before his Presidency would be over.
Yes!! I thought the same thing! But I wasn't sure, because it was so long ago, almost 44 years.
My recollection is that it was shown from an angle that placed Ziegler between Nixon and the camera. Ziegler spun around, and his sport jacket flared out on one side. Nixon spun him so hard he slightly lost his balance, but recovered rapidly.
Also I think he was holding some papers in his right hand, which he almost dropped.
Exactly, that's the one I've seen! Probably CBS' footage, since that was my preferred network in those days... Oh, the shame!!!
Considering that Nixon had a serious drinking problem over the last couple of years of his period...it’s hard to say if he even remembered doing it.
The DATE IS THE KEY. Just about the time that Congress sold out our military and allies in Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia with the Cooper-Church Amendment and others that prohibited our bombing of the North Vietnamese divisions in Laos and Cambodia, as well as in So. Vietnam.
When I was in S. Vietnam and Laos in the Fall, 1970, the Cambodians/US officials said that in Cambodia alone there were at least 5-6 NVA Divisions (1, 3, 5, 7, 9th and I interviewed NVA POWS in Monivong Hospital from the NVA’s 6th Division, which later showed up at the Battle of An Loc in April 1972 during the Easter Offensive.)
By denying our allies our massive air power, the Democrats and some turncoat Republicans helped to ensure the defeat of our overwhelmed allies and the subsequent torture, slaughter and political genocide that took place after they were captured by the Reds.
Nixon was really pissed at the stab-in-back by Congress re passing the no more air support bill which he knew basically doomed our allies to communist conquest.
Frank Church - may he rot in hell. The last time I saw him he was apparently suffering from cancer. Hope the bastard suffered longer than those he condemned to torture and death.
At that time, Nixon actually thought he could win if he let the case go forward, and he continued to believe he had a good chance of winning even after he left office. He wasn’t persuaded to resign until Buzhardt briefed Nixon and Haig on the Smoking Gun tape on July 26, 1974, after which his legal team concluded that he could no longer avoid impeachment. As it turned out, they misinterpreted the Smoking Gun tape, as John Dean has recently admitted.
Yes, perhaps that's true.
But when he pushed Ziegler, I had the impression that things were spinning out of control, and the rate of spinning was increasing alarmingly.
Nixon knew the effect the material on the tapes would have, and he knew about the cover-up.
In either case, the pressure on him must have been immense, with events in Vietnam, things going in the cold war with the USSR that were probably highly classified. SHTF time.
First of all, "hims" don't have pussies.
But, as for those who do possess such an organ, a noted furniture shopper who is now in power was heard to say, "And, when you are a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy. Do anything." Much to the cackling amusement of a miserable Bush scion.
I was close enough to Dick to see the sweat gleem on his upper lip when he gave his last address to a Joint Session, I'll never forget that!
Nixon? I don’t think so. LBJ, on the other hand, is more likely to have done that to his subordinates.
I think Newsweek had 4 still pictures in their story about it, back when it happened. Right around Watergate story getting traction.
