Question for Freeper women: Crying men?

I was recently listening to radio host, Glenn Beck, and he proudly announced that he cries really often as if it is a badge of honor.

I have noticed there are many men who like being seen crying in public: Bill Clinton, Schumer, Boehner, Anderson Cooper, my former pastor.

I have not known many men to cry in public, well my former roommate in college, but we always made fun of him when he cried.

I was raised that crying for something other than a death in the family for a man is not the thing to do.

Perhaps I am wrong? Maybe wet cheeks is the face of manliness?

Freeper women, what are your thoughts on crying men?

I am a woman. I don’t cry often, and usually when I do, it is because of being touched by something, seeing a high school marching band playing patriotic songs, Veteran’s Day last year at our granddaughter’s kindergarten class. Son graduating USMC boot camp, both kids graduating college. Leaving the prison after visiting my relative there. I don’t cry much about things that “happen to me”. My husband has similar soft spots, and I have seen him cry a few times, but not often. I might have cried tears of happiness on November 9th? I certainly have choked up recently about a young friend, who is waiting for an organ transplant.

I think Glenn Beck, Boehner, some others cry often to be dramatic.

I do not look down on men who cry, unless it gets out of control or seems to be for acting purposes.

I break down weeping whenever we sing this at church. For many reasons to most being the power of the message in the song. I have never been able to sing it without crying.

You know what they say about assumptions! A co-worker of mine who had just transferred to my group had extremely long hair and would frequently wear it in a bun. I admit it’s not to my taste but I tend to try and live and let live. He was an excellent technician!

One day I came into work and there was my co-worker with a military crew cut. I think they call it a high and tight or tight and high. Anyway, I asked him what was up. He told me a friend of his in his platoon in the 82nd Airborne had died young from testicular cancer and that he and all his buddies from their company who left the military after tours in Iraq had decided to grow their hair long and contribute it to a charity that makes wigs for people who have lost their hair to chemotherapy in order to make cancer patients life and fight for life just a little better.

There is another charity that accepts long hair for children with alopecia areata( i.e. no hair ) to help them with issues of esteem.

My son, decided in college to contribute to this charity because his best friend in High School had alopecia areata. He grew his hair down to below the middle of his back and frequently wore it in a bun. My son just had his hair cut over Spring break for his graduation pictures and graduation in a few weeks. He’s hair will make three wigs for little kids undergoing chemo or with alopetia areata.

Everyone else I assume is just to cheep to pay for a haircut ;) (wink, wink)

I forget which one it was, but there was a Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry movie where one of the cops was joking w/Clint about catching up to the times.

For example, he said, “Last night I cried in bed.”

Clint says, “Were you with a woman?”

Other cops says, “No, why do you think I was crying?”

When a true DAD holds his first-born .. there is bound to be a tear or two .. but I wouldn’t call that crying.

Years ago, when my wife left me in the middle of the night, taking the kids and refusing to reconcile, not telling me why, I cried like a baby in the privacy of my home for months.

Movies: The first time I saw Forrest Gump, I cried like a baby. I had gone to it with my kids, son was 10 and took a buddy with him. Just the fact that the kids actually sat with me in the theater was enough to strike my emotions, but I kept thinking that the character of Forrest Gump was a hero, never realized it, just going through his life as it came at him. For some strange reason, I also cried at Toy Story, because Buzz Lightyear SO wanted to be a superhero, and in the end, he was just a toy.... Sort of reminded me of men in general, not in a bad way, just probably related to balancing pride and humility...

Not a woman but as a guy there are times it is okay to cry in public...

But if you are crying at the drop of a hat as a man all the time, you need to give up your man card.

I’ve seen my husband cry quite a few times. I’ve seen him actually weep maybe twice. He is a great guy and a man’s man.

I saw an article recently written right after Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher died. The article discussed the theory that weeping was healing to the heart when experiencing grief, and it was thought that trying not to express grief by weeping was damaging to your body. Not sure if that is actually the case or not.

I’ve never thought less of men or especially my husband if tears are shed. (Phony tears are easy to spot a mile away, and are usually manipulative.)

Hmmmm. Not a fan of a man crying. There are times when it is necessary, but the clinton tears are disgusting. Of course, I have a very difficult time crying in public also, and I am female.

Oh yeah, i also ‘almost” choked up at Toy Story 3 when the kid is already grown up and going to college, and played with the toys one last time with another kid as he held back giving Woody and the toys away. It was closure for the series. I read somewhere that scene made a LOT of grown men cry.

I was one of the thousands in '04 that lined the streets of DC 8-10 deep during Reagan's state funeral procession. It was a good day all and all. But when the jets flew over in the missing man formation I noticed my throat was getting tight and a warm wet feeling on one of my cheeks.

Agreed. The only legit reasons for a man to cry is the death of a friend/loved one/pet, birth of a child and a daughter getting married. A stiff upper lip required and no boohooing or other histrionics allowed. A few tears with a stoic face. Any more than that and you lose your man card IMHO.
