In case you missed it, Tomi Lahren, the host of the political show Tomi, came out as pro-choice last week. Tomi appears on Glenn Becks Tea-Party-wet-dream network BlazeTV and is notorious for Lahrens aggressive rants against liberal snowflakes. In an appearance on The View, a typically-liberal roundtable of women, Lahren was pressed on her views on abortion. After citing the desire for limited government, she stated: "Stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well." Its reported that Lahren is also pro-gay-marriage for similar reasons.
If the last few preceding generations are any indication, millennials, especially those of us at the tail end of our generation in our early 20s, will progressively (no pun intended) become more conservative, particularly fiscally, as we begin to make more money and our own tax dollars are at stake. I say this not to undermine fiscal liberals or the validity of young peoples ideologies, but to point to the major trend that follows the (un-nuanced and generalizing) maxim: If youre a conservative under 30, youre heartless; if youre a liberal over 30, youre brainless. While I certainly dont buy into that mentality, I think that theres some truth to the idea that theres a trend of people who move fiscally conservative as they age.
The thing is, I cant imagine a world run by the millennial generation that doesnt make room for social liberalism. Those issues are hardly contentious topics of debate among young people, and thats coming from someone surrounded by people who were mostly raised by white, Christian Republicans (and therefore might be less of the case in certain pockets here at UT). Im certain, however, that social liberalism is even more deeply ingrained in the young adults residing in purple and blue states.
So what does the inevitable millennial Republican Party look like? I would argue that as much as those socially liberal beliefs could be rooted in liberalism, they could just as easily be associated with libertarianism. In other words, rather than those convictions being founded in social justice, theyre founded in individual liberties: Stay out of my bedroom, dont profile me, dont legislate your religion on me, stay out of my pants, and yes, just as Tomi Lahren said, stay out of my body.
The next logical step is telling the government to stay out of my paycheck. That brings us to the heart of libertarianism: the government should affect my life as little as possible. The bipartisan struggle, in my mind, will inevitably become a debate over the role and the size of the government rather than individual arguments about the multitude of roles the government plays, and well see the disappearance of conservatism in favor of libertarianism. Maybe thats wishful thinking, that political ideologies will become more consistent intra-party, but especially with our generations access to information and increasing political awareness, I think ideological consistency is achievable.
I do think her comments are telling. Even a rising star in the tea party version of republicanism cant get behind a pro-life platform. And if Tomi Lahren, someone about as conservative as you can get for a college-educated millennial, cant get there, I think youd be hard pressed to have an entire political party who can.
I’d say she is the face of modern Republicanism already. A total RINO
She’s a great foot soldier but no reason to believe she possesses separation speed.
The problem with gay marriage is not gay marriage, but the government saying everyone needs to accept it... the same can be said with abortion... religious rights trump civil rights. As with Islam apparently
She is entitled to her opinion.
Her employer is entitled to do what they think is right.
She’s big enough in media to find a job easily at this point in her life. The MSM will pick her up in a heartbeat.
She spoke of ‘hypocrites’ and when the folks in Oregon protested for release of the Hammonds (ranchers jailed as terrorists for lighting a backfire-five year mandatory sentence) her boss Glenn Beck was obsessed with trashing Trump instead.
The Blaze turned away in its political obsession. I took note and ended up voting for Trump.
I am Pro-Life and am willing to speak of myself as a hypocrite and a sinner. I have said one thing and done another and I was wrong.
But that doesn’t mean I have to become “Pro-Choice” on abortion or other human life related matters.
Yes in drug induced dreams of sick Democrats and morons like Stabby The Clown Beck. (he should have been arrested for threatening to stab Trump.)
She has Opportunism down pat, that’s for sure.
Good intentions, but paralyzed with narcissism.
Tomi needs to go home, grow up and give us a call when she has done that.
More of a Libertarian.....
That may be representative of 20-something college educated "conservatives": SE Cupp, Kat Timpf, Kristin Tate.
Yep. And Kennedy on FBN.
I’m not convinced yet. Her previous statements were clearly against abortion. Her recent statement was more about keeping the federal government out of it than supporting it. I’d like to hear more on the subject from her before condemning her.
Liberaltarian.
I think her boss, Glen Beck was obsessed with HER! I certainly would.
I can't argue against this. I'm in the military and surrounded by Millennial "conservatives" who espouse more liberal views on various social issues than their parents and grandparents did. In this respect, Tomi Lauren is fairly representative of her generation.
Yeah. I was going to mention her, but I wasn't sure which generation she belonged to.
Some of the libertarians are hard core economic libertarians. Some are just for gay marriage and legalized pot and put off by social and religious conservatives. But it does seem to be a trend right now.
Liberal-tarians are NOT conservatives. They are closer to a cult. : )
In contradiction to the author, I have read that millennials are more pro life than previous generations. The theory as to why that is because of science. When they have babies, they all get ultrasounds now and are able to see a living human baby inside the womb at a very early point in the pregnancy. In contrast, when my kids were born only one of our kids did we get to see with the ultrasound due to possible concerns with the pregnancy. That was the only time back then that they did ultrasounds because it was only in it’s infancy and very expensive. The pictures were very grainy, not like today.
