A drained pool filled with mud, crumbled roads and overgrown plots of grass. These eerie images aren't from a post-apocalyptic movie, they are photographs of several Olympic venues in Rio - just seven months after the games finished. Despite promises from the organisers that the billion-dollar site would be used to benefit Brazil's citizens, it remains deserted and dilapidated. The country remains in a deep economic and political crisis following the games and critics believe the money spent on the games could have been better spent on developing infrastructure in the country.

Brazil the country of the future and will always be. -Charles de Gaulle

Brazil the country where the ruling elite is more concerned about what outsiders think of the country than doing the actual job of goverance.

Wasn’t it a few years ago that the elites were telling us that the BRIC’s (Brazil, Russia, India, China) were going to rule the world?

Oh, and that The Chicom economy was going to surpass that of the US in 2016?

Must’ve missed all of this.

While this is typical for many countries that do not have sufficient funds to maintain even basic infrastructure, it is particularly tragic given how much the Brasilians in Rio embrace the beauty of living life outdoors given he gift of their gorgeous tropical weather.

If the criminal Dilma and predecessor criminal Lula had not squandered their nations wealth, this venue could have easily been altered to provide the people with a beautiful recreational park. They could have repurposed it for so many things. It's a harder loss given the potential it had for those crushed by poverty living in what on the surface is one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.

Very sad...

What little I've seen of Brazil leads me to suspect that the country is one huge cesspool with some beautiful beaches (Rio) and beautiful scenery (Christ The Redeemer).

While there (about 10 years ago) we took a day trip to a national park on the outskirts of Rio.As our bus climbed the hill to get to the park (that area is very hilly) the guide directed our attention to a huge collection of broken down, ramshackle, structures on an adjacent hillside. She said it was a "favela" which,IIRC,is Portuguese for slum and that it was one of the worst in the country. She said it was so violent,so lawless, that the Brazilian *Army* didn't dare try to enter it even during *daylight* hours.

Why awarding the Olympics to 3rd-world countries isn’t such a good idea. After the world congratulates itself for being so forward-looking and packs its bags, the reality that this is still a 3rd-world country sets in. Only now they have a multi-billion-dollar hangover from the party they threw.

What a total waste of money that could have been better spent.Something like this happens when American city’s get suckered into building sports stadiums for these wealthy team owners.

If Brazil and Argentina are “promises”, then Chile is “deliverable”.

God Bless the USA and Lord thank you for making me an American. I will always be filled with gratitude for that. I will never know why you gave me so much and such good circumstances when so much of the rest of the world is such a mess. I apologize for never having lived up to what you expected from me.

High taxes, heavily regulated markets, and massive government corruption. Welcome to Brazil, or California.
