Microsoft blocks Ryzen and Kaby Lake users from updates on Windows 7 and 8.1

Microsoft blocks Ryzen and Kaby Lake users from updates on Windows 7 and 8.1

Upgrade or die

Software king of the world Microsoft is locking down system updates for those using AMD’s Ryzen and Intel’s Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 and 8.1.

Users are now starting to encounter the following error message: “Your PC uses a processor that isn’t supported on this version of Windows.”

This message appears when a user attempts to update their OS and a quick look at Microsoft’s support page reveals upgrading to Windows 10 is the only way to fix the problem.

Microsoft’s support page on the matter says that Windows 10 is the ‘only’ OS to support these updated hardware configurations. You will need Windows 10 if running Kaby Lake or newer, AMD’s Bristol Ridge or newer (this includes Ryzen), or the Qualcomm 8996 and want to receive important updates to remain secure.

Those who own these chips should not be surprised, and indeed those who spend money on getting the latest chips should probably not be using Windows 7 or 8 anyway. AMD warned that this would be happening in February.

At the time, it said it would not be releasing drivers for Ryzen running on Windows 7. Intel hinted that something similar would happen for Kaby Lake support last year.

The question really is one of ethics. Windows 8.1 won’t hit its end of life until next year, Vole is switching off its support early for new chips.

Mint won't also fix the problem?

I'll dig out a link to the other thread on this and cross link in a couple of minutes.

Lots of confusion on all of this...

I don't think one can quite say Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 won't run on the new stuff....

But it does say

Don't call us if you have a problem with running the OLD STUFF!

Ethics? No, I think it's more a matter of a broken business plan. "Windows as a service" has been a MSFT dream practically from the get go.

SCREW MS. I will NEVER buy an MS OS.

Mint runs better/faster on half the hardware.

Thanks for the Vole info. Interesting it’s mentioned in the article without explanation or a link.

I am currently running Ubuntu 16.04.2

Left Mint because I needed Gnome with its fantastic accessibility options ...zoom specifically.

That won’t solve the issue - Apple does not let you update old machines to their latest OS releases either.

I wasn’t in on the other discussion. Any operating system which has needed this amount of manipulation to get people to upgrade... is obviously going in a bad direction. I have appreciated the efforts of Microsoft since long before Windows came out, but the last few years have been a complete embarrassment. Satya Nadella has a vision for the products produced that goes against what many of us want. It is creating an opportunity for those who would like to get back to the basics when it comes to operating systems.

I have a Windows 10 computer. I have had a computer with every Microsoft Operating System installed. My preference is still Windows 7. These days the hardware is so good that getting the latest and greatest is no longer necessary for a pleasant experience. The most demanding applications that I currently use are high definition video editing applications and 3-D Modeling programs for producing objects on our 3-D Printer. And I am having a hard time justifying purchasing a new computer even for those programs.

I view any new updates from Microsoft for Windows 7 with suspicion because I know that their desire is to faze it out. So their incentive to screw your system up is strong.

"Windows as a service" has been a MSFT dream practically from the get go.

Exactly correct. Case in point: Windows RT didn't "fail." It was Microsoft's test plan to see if "Windows as a Service" and "Windows Applications as a Service" would actually work.

It did. While Windows RT "failed" Windows as a Service is really where Microsoft has wanted to go all along. Office365, Azure, DevOps in the Cloud and more are all "Services" that Microsoft offers that are subscription based. It is no secret to those of us who are briefed on Microsoft's technology roadmap several times a year that "Windows as a Service" is coming. It's already being offered in the form of Windows Desktop "In the Cloud" via VDI that only work with other Microsoft based services, at least for now. It will be expanded to include third-party "as a Service" offerings soon.

Microsoft is also getting hardware manufacturers to lock down their hardware so that "legacy" Intel CPU's and mobo's won't work or install Windows 7 or 8 either.

In short, Microsoft is adopting Apple's PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE model with OS and Hardware. Running to Apple won't "fix" anything, other than cause one to spend more $$$ to run an Intel based system that is locked to only run an Apple OS and use Apple components that all cost a premium compared to their Intel/Windows based counterparts.

Don't like what Microsoft is doing? Don't run to Apple, move to Linux. That truly is the ONLY option at this point.
