FULL TITLE: Farewell, old friend: Touching moment Air Force dog handler hugs his dead K-9 draped in an American flag moments before he was laid to rest

A heartbreaking photo shows the moment an Air Force sergeant had to say goodbye to his K9 partner.

Air Force sergeant Kyle Smith, from Gastonia, North Carolina, said that having to put Bodza down was one of the hardest things that he has ever done.

He was euthanized on Thursday, and a military canine trainer draped a flag over his body. A photo shows Smith giving Bodza one final hug as he was laid to rest.

*doxie

Put my Daisy down a year ago this week. Picked up Ernie, doxie #3 in April. Sure helps to have another flea biscuit around the house...

Lost our fur baby on Nov 21st.

Still wake up in the night and think she’s snuggled up against me. Then I remember.

She died in my arms at the vet’s between testing. Was holding her and went to hand her to the aid and she was gone. Probably a stroke.

Took her home to bury her beneath the rock and bushes she would invariably run to when let out - to flush any birds or critters that had the audacity to occupy her yard.

Miss her terribly.

Raised on a farm and we had a border collie, who herded the cows for milking. Father died and my mother moved from the farm. The dog was never leashed or penned - he took us to school in town and returned to take us home. As we grew older, he looked for some other responsibilities. He found a herd of beef steers and decided to round them up.

The owner complained. His steers were not gaining weight. My mother was told to chain the dog. She couldn’t do it and set him free. She mourned for years.

Sorry for the loss of your fur baby. We lost our 3-year-old pup Jan. 22. I think, and cry, about her all the time.

It got me too. I had to put down my beloved “Dewar’’ fifteen years ago. Broke my heart clean in two. All these years gone by and I still miss him everyday.

I,too had to put my 3 dogs down within 6 weeks of each other. First two were 2 weeks apart and were suffering. Last, was my Sandra Sue, (my tagline from 2010) Sandy had minor surgery and was bleeding from gums night of surgery. Thought she bit her chain. Went to work the next day and got a call from my neighbor downstairs. Something was wrong with said Sandy. When I got home, blood all over the house. My poor baby was bleeding internally. When she saw me she laid on the floor with me. She took 3 long breaths and was gone. She waited for me to be with her. I had the ambulance take her to the vet who did the surgery. Bastard couldn't even look me in the eye. I had my baby cremated and she is on my mantle with my late parents. God, how I loved and miss her still. I now have a new home with an acre of fenced in yard. I have 3 poms and 2 shitzus. Gonna get a baby lab or German shepherd to grow up with my little ones. They have plenty of room to run and play. I often envision Sandy out there too. The pain never goes away. Never...

Little dog has gone to that happy hunting ground in the sky. Least we appreciated what he did for us.

I hear ya. I had 5 within 3 years of age and I knew one day how bad it would be

Sure enough, from 2005 to 2012 . . . I will probably never have another one. Just too hard on me

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find -- it's your own affair -- But . . . you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

Rudyard Kipling

Like a moth to a flame I can never pass this type of thread. Should learn to do so but can't.

Brings back the pain of losing Scout, Tigger, Nikki, Brutus, Cissi, Booger, Duke, Retread, Ethel, Lucy, and Willie. Gone, but never forgotten.
