Glory, Be! Lake Berryessa's Glory Hole Is Spilling Over

Lake Berryessa's Glory Hole is spilling over for the first time in 10 years.

The reservoir two hours north of San Francisco reached full capacity and an elevation level of 440 feet Friday at 6 a.m., and began spilling, according to U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokesperson Janet Sierzputowski.

The unique spillway operates similarly to a bathtub drain

I live in NYC. Glory hole means something VERY different.

Rudy got rid of most of them but I’m sure they’re still around.

San Francisco is rather famous for its hills. Swamps are lowland depressions. But yes, there are SOME swamps, of course, as you’ll find near any coastal area. Nothing like Boston, Washington, New York, etc., where the cities are built on filled-in land.

Lake Berryessa is Napa County’s water supply, in addition to some other towns in Solano county.

Its not in Sam Franfrisco.

Its in Yolo County and Napa County, about 50 miles northeast of Frisco.

actually it is south of San Fransicko but the political climate is about the same

There’s another one in Orinda, at the EBMUD plant, but it is covered by a glass roof because it feeds Clairmont tunnel that is the drinking water supply for north Oakland and Berkeley.

If sinkholes didn’t terrify me so much, I’d spend time working out the physics. It seems underwater rivers have gyres caused by boulders or upcroppings or whatever that cause the swirl that spins up towards the surface when the underground river is full, eroding the crust in a circle. Horrifying.
