Columbia University accidentally sent out false acceptance emails to 277 prospective students before recalling them this week.
The messages that the Ivy League university issued on Wednesday told the applicants that they had been admitted to the Masters program at the Mailman School of Public Health.
Columbia said in a statement issued Friday that the letters were mistakenly sent out due to human error, but had no further details on the nature of that error. The school immediately discovered the mistake and quickly sent off apology emails within an hour, the statement said.
We deeply apologize for this miscommunication, Julie Kornfield, the Vice Dean of Education at the School of Public Health, said in the statement. We value the energy and enthusiasm that our applicants bring to the admissions process, and regret the stress and confusion caused by this mistake. We are working assiduously to strengthen our internal procedures in order to ensure that this mistake does not happen in the future.

What? They accidentally accepted some straight white men? Glad that got fixed right away!
Sue!
The Mailman School? Really? How appropriate, then, that there would be a problem with the mail! (apologies to conscientious postal workers everywhere)
Huh? Is that John Kasich giving Wassermann tests?
Everyone who was turned down should consider themselves lucky.
I had an HR person once give me the “wrong” stack of resumes for a job I was trying to fill. THey gave me the ones they’d already screened out, which is to say, the mostly white, morstly maie applicants. The person begged me to give them back and get the “right” file but I told her I’d already made an offer to one of the white guys and wasn’t about to go back and retract its. Truth is, I hadn’t actually at that time, but I sure as hell did withint the hour and I did hire the guy who worked out very well.
The sun rises in the east. This is news?
Mailman is a legit surname. Stanley Mailman married into the York, PA Grumbacher family (Bon-Ton and other dept stores). I had no idea he had a college dept, too.
Mailman? Kornfield?
Mmmmmkay.
277 prospective students dodged a bullet. :)
