How much of the loss is from a general decline in cable and satellite subscriptions and how much from a decline in viewership beyond that? If no one watched ESPN, they would still get billions from the per customer charge they get from cable and satellite companies.

Must be cord-cutting. I don't watch ESPN unless they are the only source for a college football game, but I'm paying for it with my DiSH subscription.

ESPN turned left many years ago. People now have alternatives.

Although you’ll have no argument from me that ESPN has a liberal slant, I doubt the 10,000 subscriber loss is all due to this. Impact, yes. More significant is many of these subscribers are finding better streaming options (some not legal). I know more and more people that don’t have cable/satellite at all. Everything is streamed via Netflix, AZ Prime etc. The author points out some good things regarding Disney. Content is and will be king. Cable, with the exception of web access, will go the way of the Blockbuster. Just my opinion.

at what point can Disney shareholders file a lawsuit?

I recall also that Disney didn’t make a fuss when planned parenthood was using some Disney intellectual property to promote its genocidal business...I can’t remember details, but I think PP was using Pinnocchio (and not just any Pinnocchio, but clearly, the Disney one).

At some point...don’t shareholders have a legitimate claim that Disney has not met its duties to shareholders under the business judgment rule?

I blame ESPN for ruining he traditions around college football and college basketball on the West Coast. The greedy colleges of course are responsible also. But the scheduling that results in basketball games starting at 9PM local time or night football games in Washington and Oregon is ruining the regional fan experience. And unless your team is among the top of the league you get the 3rd string camera crew and minimal production values on the broadcast along with the incessant hype for other games and distracting scores that no one cares about.

Here’s one potential solution I learned about from the Clark Howard radio program recently: http://www.untangled.tv

I went to it yesterday and it takes you through a series of questions about where you live, the programming you want, etc. Then, it tells you what to get to match up to your programming desires, including the proper over-the-air antenna to replace your cable/satellite box. You will have to keep some kind of high-speed internet access for this to work because it all depends on various streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, etc.

First, I have long been scheming to construct some type of ala carte programming, but I’m not there yet. I have looked at a variety of emerging technologies like Sling/Dish, Roku, and so on, but they are not quite seamless enough yet, although they are getting there and I hold out hope. Ultimately, however, I discovered that my carrier (Directv) has some plan which eliminates ESPN, but retains FoxNews, which was what I was looking to hold on to.

It’s still not where I want to be, but just this week I got rid of ESPN and Netfix (Dear White People). A small victory. So I still have Directv, albeit considerably scaled down, and Amazon Prime.

The reality for my household is that we rarely watch TV. And when we have tried to watch TV there are dozens and dozens of channels devoted to selling vacuum cleaners, blenders, and assorted ailment remedies. Then, if you do happen to find something — absolutely ruling out leftwing propaganda such as “Modern Family” — you are left with a program or a movie where the average commercial break is literally 4+ minutes long. They have made watching TV extraordinarily tedious and I have all but completely given up.

So, until some type of ala carte option finally becomes available, I have scaled down my package to the lowest denominator that retains FoxNews. It ain’t perfect, but I did also cut my monthly programming bill $51 a month, so there is that too.

It’s a start.

Was tuning in to some sports shows the morning after the Super Bowl, most were showing highlights and analysis. Turn on ESPN, non stop Trump bashing.

Clay Travis is from Nashville, I used to listen to him on 104.5FM, prior to him working for the Fox Sports 1 start-up.

He worked for Democratic Congressman, Jim Cooper, voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012, and recently voted for Gary Johnson in 2016.

Clay isn’t liberal, nor is he conservative.
He’s very much in the middle.
It just shows you how liberal ESPN (and most of the sports media) has gone.

Declaring the loss of cable subscribers to be because of how ESPN works is pretty disingenuous. The cable concept as a whole is having problems, and ALL the networks, including FoxNews, are losing viewers because of it. That’s not a left/ right thing, it’s a static business model thing.

With respect, I don’t recall making such an assertion nor do I see it in the linked article.

That’s the entire article. The article is insisting they’re profits are plummeting because of the left turn, and that ain’t the whole picture. He even talks briefly about the cable and satellite bleed, but then continues on with the politics.

In short, I think ESPN President John Skipper is within a few months from being fired by the upper management at the Walt Disney Company.

Why? Because while the upper management may agree with Skipper's views, they also know that sports has to be as apolitical as possible to keep viewers--as they noticed when the NFL got a LOT of negative press for not squashing Colin Kaepernick's protests. I would not be surprised that George Bodenheimer--who was Skipper's predecessor and highly respected by ESPN employees--will be asked to return as ESPN President to clean up the mess Skipper left behind and "groom" a more proper future division President.
