An American historian has unearthed never-seen-before pictures of Stalin-era Russia which were taken by an Army Major. Martin Manhoff's collection has been described as a 'unique visual archive' of life in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. He was deported for spying in 1954, and hid the photographs in his closet in Washington State. Until today, they remained untouched, but history buff Douglas Smith has now released the stash of the pictures taken from behind the Iron Curtain.

I read a great article a couple of years ago by a man who had traveled to a large number of countries all around the world.
The article sought to dispel the greatest myths that Americans had about other countries.
#1 was “America is hated around the world”. He maintained that this is not true. Because in every country around the globe frankly, people are too busy earning a living, taking care of the kids, maintaining the home, dealing with personal relationships, and all the other routine stuff of daily life. They are too busy to give us more than a passing thought.

I saw signs like that all over the Soviet Union when I visited there in 1972. Signs in front of bakeries, pastry shops, pharmacies, etc. simply read, Bakery, Pastry Shop or Pharmacy--not Joe's Bakery, Moscow Pastry Shop or Feel-Good Pharmacy. Since the state owned everything, there was no need for brand names.

I especially love the Russian road rage videos. Absolutely hilarious.
It’s amazing how many Russians have baseball bats and axes in the trunk of their cars. It’s also hilarious how they will just fight in the middle of a busy highway. Which, in itself, is dangerous, considering the reckless way many of them drive.
One thing you can say about them though: NOTHING scares them.
I’m part Russian so I can now understand where some of my temper comes from:)

Also note how shabby everything was. You have really nice building, but they looked run down and the street was obviously ill maintained in the first picture of Moscow. The building were dirty.
What you get with socialism, if no one owns it, not one can fix it and no one cares.

What stood out to me is that the people during that era are much better dressed than the crowds at my local Wal-Mart who can afford over-priced sneakers and iPhones.
In truth I think I could live in Russia and be happy as any country that spans half the globe will never run out of things to see and explore. Regards,
