THE prospect of a Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight has created a mega-buzz about megabucks. UFC boss Dana White was on The Herd on Friday, countering the boxer’s $15 million offer to the UFC superstar with one of $25 million to each combatant in a proposed boxing bout.

The superfight lends itself to the perfect storm for Las Vegas linemakers.

Money Mayweather has a lot riding on this, only Rocky Marciano retired as a 50-0 champ. Conor can take quite a beating he would need to learn how defend himself in the ring...

10 to 1 for a 39 year old vs. a 28 year old? I would take that bet in a heartbeat!

Depends entirely if they are boxing or mixed martial arts. Very different rules, different strategies and different experience.

Mayweather considers himself a master at defense. If this was MMA, Conor might be the favorite...

In a boxing event, McGregor loses big. This is on par with Rocky v Hulk Hogan in the wrestling wring an exhibition only.

Look at some of McGregor's past bouts that went long.

He has no stamina...at least not enough to fend off Mayweather when he hits stride about the 3rd round.

Mayweather trains to stand and contact...and avoid being hit.

McGregor takes hits in his quest to contact beyond a punch and he can't do that in a boxing max with Mayweather.

I realize McGregor can take a punch, but I think Mayweather would literally beat the shit out of him.

But, it matters not, 'cause Mayweather is in the 100 million dollar purse category and the best McGregor and White are offering is a half purse of 50 million.

He won't accept it unless he convinces himself that he can cakewalk it in under two rounds, maybe three.

I'm not taking anything away from either of them, but it is two different arenas and McGregor is severely limited in not being able to contact beyond a clinch after punching...which the ref will be watching for specifically.

There is a reason McGregor is the 10-1 underdog.

I expect Mayweather to dope again like he did for the Pacquiao fight. That said boxing skills will destroy MMA.

That's the reasonable thing to say, and I believe it. But what gives McGregor a shot is the fact that he is an amateur in the world of professional boxing. Mayweather can easily prepare to meet another professional because professionals in any sphere of endeavor are largely predictable. Amateurs are unorthodox; you cannot as easily anticipate what they are going to do and be as well prepared. The one fighter who gave Mayweather trouble, and beat him in my view, was Marcos Maidana, who threw punches from odd angles. Mayweather was not prepared for Maidana, and without help from the judges, that would have been his first loss. This may be the case with Mcgregor, who certainly has the punch to hurt Floyd if he connects.

I’m not saying McGregor is the favorite, just not a 10 to 1 dog. I think it will be a close fight.

I don't watch MMA so it's hard to comment. From the little I've seen MMA can't compete with the speed of boxing and certainly not from a doped up (or not) Mayweather. I'm concerned McGregor could get really hurt and the fight will be not much of a contest.

It's interesting though. Mayweather being a counter puncher and all.

You’re right about that. They don’t often throw straight punches, and what they do throw you could easily see coming. On top of that, they have not much speed, and little, if any, concept of head movement. Yes, someone could get hurt, except that they are used to being hit with elbows and worse.
