  A number of weapons, including two guns in a violin case, have been found stashed along the Potomac River in Washington D.C.

  U.S. Park Police said a woman walking in the woods near the C&O Canal, which runs along the river, found the case on Wednesday.

  When police arrived they found more guns and ammunition stashed in pails and garbage bags nearby.

The point is, that prepositioned weapons inside of a security cordon can be recovered after the assailants have passed through screening.

I am wondering where this woman who supposedly saw the violin case was walking as the primary walking trail there is the towpath which is across the canal from the road and several feet lower.

She might have been walking along the Capitol Crescent Trail, which parallels the towpath and which in places is alongside the road before it curves off and up the hill to Bethesda.

This story should have never made the papers.

The police should have gathered the weapons, checked for fingerprints, run the serial numbers, make them inoperable by pulling firing pins and then replaced them as they were found. Set up live video feed and snatch whoever came back to get them.

Pre-positioning may not have anything to do with this find. It may be normal weapons supply line for terrorists and drug cartels in the DC area. This may be a regular, ongoing activity.

Hundreds of guns have been stolen in the Atlanta area in the last 2 months, organized smash and grabs at gun shops using stolen trucks. All these guns are hot, and one would not want to be caught with a trunk full or them, so blind transfer via hidden cache would make sense.

While DC isn’t huge, it’s not tiny, either. The whole District wouldn’t be in the security cordon, just the Capitol to White House area. The Canal road area is pretty far away.

I took a tour of a Sheriff department in Michigan. In their armory, they had two Thompson sub-machine guns, in violin cases they had confiscated from rum runners during prohibition.

It was pretty cool to see. I always thought that was just TV legend.
