A giant wire spool fell off the back of a truck on a Pennsylvania highway and started to roll down the highway. Luckily, no cars were hit. See what it looks like in real-time, at 10x speed and slo-mo.

You should see what happens when a roll of steel sheet gets loose on the highway and starts unrolling...

A spool of cable would be as bad as steel.

It would be nice to know where in PA it happened. The link wasn’t helpful.

I was hoping the cable end would come loose soe we could see what a really long piece of black spagetti would look like ;-)

Would have been better with Yakety Sax playing in the background.

The spool stayed intact (and fortunately didn't jump the barrier and finally fell over).

The aftermath of the unrolled rolls of steel sheet I've seen blocked the freeeway and took quite a while to cut up into pieces to remove from the scene. Plus a buncha concrete pavement sections got smashed from the initial bouncing and had to be replaced in short order.

Good to periodically check your loads and have redundant chaining.

I saw a steel coil on the turnpike that did just that. It went through the Jersey barrier like it was nothing. It unwound enough to block both East and West bound lanes. Fortunately it didn’t hit any cars.

I have two close encounters. One passed me on the shoulder going the other way at night - closing speed about 120. Poopy pants.

The second was not a year later, one came off a truck, uncoiling as it went, launched right over an exit ramp like a roll of stainless steel toilet paper on Devil’s Night.

Both from trucks overturning on the PA Turnpike. The only comfort is I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have felt a thing.

Even smaller things can be a problem. A set of semi dual wheels separated from the truck, left the highway and hit a house. Almost got a guy on the john at home.

A single wheel-tire from a light duty vehicle got loose, crossed the grassy median and hit a minivan head on. People died.

It IS dangerous out there.

The trucks on the PA Turnpike freak my wife out when we are close to them. She’s probably right. (As usual....)

I’ve seen the results of all of that (due to former career). “Life comes at you fast” - but so does Death sometimes.

Years ago, something like this happened in GA. The spool fell off of a truck and hit a woman getting the mail out of her mailbox. She died.

My closest encounters have been fallen rocks, elk in fog and cattle inches off side of the road at high speed at night.

I drive as little as possible at night now.
