While Rep. Armando "Mando" Martinez (D - Weslaco) and his family celebrated New Year's Eve, a stray bullet — apparently fired by a reveler welcoming 2017 — struck the state representative in the head.
"It felt like a sledgehammer hit me over the head," said Martinez, who called KGBT News from the hospital.
After a few moments, Martinez and his wife realized he'd been hit by the bullet.
They rushed to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Doctors later transferred him to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where surgeons removed the bullet.

I can identify. I live in a mostly Black heavily Dem part of S Atlanta in John Lewis District. I heard a lot of both fireworks and gunfire last night, the first time I’ve heard gunfire since the previous New Year, and the New Year before that as I’ve now spent over 3 years in this same neighborhood.
I often wonder where all those bullets go on New Year’s eve. Does everyone buy and use blanks?
I live in a very civilized mostly white neighborhood in the middle of the country and there were guns going off for 30 minutes last night.
Miami PD routinely issues “stay inside” warnings for New Year’s Eve. And it is good advice to heed.
What goes up, must come down.
Sometimes even the real Amish do it.
It’s a big problem in New Orleans where falling bullets have killed people.
Listened to the police scanner where I live,reports of gunfire.LOL!
Latinos do not believe that “what goes up must come down.” Families with children go to celebrate where drunks shoot guns into the air. A three year old girl died when struck by a falling bullet two or three years ago in San Antonio.
I spent New Year’s Eve 99/2000 in Albuquerque with a friend.
He said “Wait ‘til you hear this, it’s going to sound like Beirut on a Saturday night.” He was right. Non-stop fireworks and gunfire for 30 minutes including numerous bursts of full-auto fire.
In fact, we are so civilized that although we’re a 3 hour drive from Ferguson, no one rioted. We’re so civilized that in an outpouring of joy at the Royals winning the World Series a year ago, 750,000 people took to the street and no arrests were made, no damage done, no cars turned over. The only thing that the cops had to do was help lost children.
I expected his head to be a lot harder than that.

I don’t know anybody so stupid in my life time to shoot into the sky while around during folks activities.
Therfore this is a dumber than a box of rocks community.
Who in the hell would waste ammo, would waste ammo on a person such as this...

Not a lot of gunfire near me, but I heard shotshell shot outside. Found what looked like #7-#8 shot pellets in my truck bed.
He is a democrat, shots to the head do not kill them. He is lucky that he did not get hit in the buttocks where his brains are.

It may have come from across the border. They’ve had problems there of gang gun fights where bullets end up on our side of the border.
Democrat neighborhood for ya. Probably a gangsta. They do this in the Savannah and Jacksonville ghettos. Miami is terrible about this. All probably illegal guns
If that was the Weslaco at the southern tip of Texas, he basically was in Mexico.
