And Penn State would have been blasted by Clemson something like 45 to 49 to nothing. Penn State has nowhere near the athletes Clemson has now.

I was surprised it was such a one-sided game.

You’re right, the game will be in Tampa. It should be a great game!

Actually, this really illustrates how the conference championships can often muddy the water in the NCAA football playoff picture. This is especially when you have these large conferences with two divisions, and all of the best teams are in one division.

It's true that Penn State was the Big 10 champion, but it's ludicrous to suggest that a team with two losses should get into the playoffs and contend for the national championship just because they won their conference title game.

The 2011 season in the SEC almost turned the national championship into a joke. In that season, there were three SEC teams that ended up in the Top 5 in the national rankings -- Alabama at #1, LSU at #2, and Arkansas at #5. But because all three of these teams played in the same division of the SEC, only one of them could play in the SEC championship game. As it turned out, LSU finished with the best record in that division ... so they played in the conference title game against a Georgia team with four losses but finished at the top of their division because they were 7-1 in the conference. If LSU had lost to Georgia in that conference championship game, we could have seen the most ludicrous scenario of all with Alabama and Arkansas playing for the national title. Not only did neither of those teams win their conference championship ... but neither of them even played in the SEC title game!

“The Clemson team that was out there tonight can beat Alabama”

absolutely true, especially if the Alabama team that played tonight shows up for the championship game. Alabama played a sloppy, uninspired game which tells you Washington had no business being in the playoff. Boring game.

OTOH the Florida State=Michigan game last night was a corker!

In 2011, you left out the fact that LSU beat both Alabama and Arkansas during the season. I think LSU would have dropped only from 1 to 2 with a Georgia loss, unless it looked like the national title game.

Well, Ohio State was the third best team in the Big 10. Couldn’t even make the conference championship game. No wonder they lost to a good ACC team.

At least the Ohio State coach didn’t pull a Woody Hays against Clemson.

Right -- I should have been more clear about that. All three of those teams had one loss in the conference, but LSU went to the title game on tiebreakers because they beat the other two.

Maybe LSU would have only dropped to #2, but could that ranking be justified if they lost to a rival with four losses?

The national championship will be here in Phoenix on the 9th.

It’s in Tampa.

No, the 2017 Division I Football Championship will be played in Frisco, Texas on January 7.

Here's the NCAA web page that says so:

Talk about kicking the opponent’s behind. Wow. First shutout for OSU since The Rose Bowl in the 1920’s.

First time ever Urban Meyer has been shut out.

What's the over/under on the number of bottles of Prilosec Urban will be hitting on tonight?

If Ped State had any decency it wouldn’t have a football program.
