Why Are Italian-Americans Not Considered Latin(o)s?
Self | December 23, 2016 | PJ-Comix

One thing that has always amused me is why Italian-Americans are not considered Latins or Latinos (which also means "Latin" in Italian). To get an idea of how absurd this is, Italians (or their ancestors) were the original Latins. On top of that Italians are definitely more Latin than the residents of many countries considered to be populated by Latinos. An example is Mexico where folks entirely Indian or Mestizo are considered Latino in this country but Italian-Americans are not.

I'm figuring this has strictly to do with affirmative action programs. Still, it is amusing that the original Latin people are not considered "Latino" in the USA.

p.s. Are people whose ancestors are all from Spain considered "Latino?" If so this makes the fact that Italian-Americans are not considered Latin(o) even more absurd.

Friends of ours who live in Switzerland call Italy “Europe’s Mexico” and say it’s a common reference.

Argentina’s population is over 60% of Italian heritage.

Including the current Pope. Unlike most clerics from all parts of the world, Pope Francis did not have to learn Italian. He spoke it from birth in his Italian neighborhood and at home.

A very good question. I have often wondered that myself. I have a great grandmother whose maiden name was campioni which means I must be 1/8 Italian. (Or 1/16 .. whatever)
IF I point to that and say I have Latin blood I'm told no.

If you are Italian and wish to identify as Latino for affirmative action purposes, by all means do so.

Maybe an Italian woman or man. Maybe even African-American since Italians joke that Africa begins south of Rome. Sicily is off the coast of Africa... so if it helps you get into university or get a job, why not?

Look at Rachel Dolezal or Elizabeth Warren. If it profits you, go for it!

Nobody can challenge you.

After you solve that one dwell on this for awhile:

Should Australian aborigines be considered "African American" when they move to the U.S.? If not then what PC label should used? ( I know, I know they aren't Negro, they are Australoid)

You'd never think by looking at him that he was "Hispanic" in the American sense.

Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Chileans and everyone in between come in all shapes and colors from extremely blonde to extremely black; from very tall to very short. Some dress very Hollywood American. Some dress very business suit American. Some dress very ethnic sub-group. But I know man non-Hispanics who try to pass for Hispanic. I've repeatedly been mistaken for Mexican (especially by Puerto Ricans because I learned my Spanish from Mexicans). How is it possible to look at a person and think that the person is, or is not, Hispanic? One must be psychic.

For college applications I see Spaniards included as “Hispanic” (though I don’t recall seeing Portuguese); considering they were one and the same 500+ years ago that is odd.

Follow the money.
When my daughter was in middle school, she was asked to fill out a form. One question asked her race/ethnicity. She wrote down 1/2 White, 1/2 Mexican.

The teacher told her she had to choose between her mother or her father. It escalated to the principal who agreed with the teacher. My wife and I were called in and told that our daughter was disruptive to insist of defying the teacher.

It turned out they wanted our daughter to say she was Mexican. They were 2 students away from meeting a certain threshhold for a special pot of Federal money when school reached a certain level of Hispanic. It was big money in the millions for the School.

Follow the money.

When I was a kid, I was taught that Latinos were people whose primary language was derived from Latin, which is a pretty wide net...

"There is also debate about whether Brazilians qualify as Hispanic or Latino. "

There are about 200 million people in Brazil...about 100 million self-identify as Black.
(There are more Blacks in Brazil than any other country outside Africa)

Latins by definition are natives or inhabitans of a country whose language developed from Latin. The French language developed from vulgar Latin... would you call a Frenchman Latino?
