A family source said that Glenn was in declining health, that his condition was grave, and that Annie Glenn and his children and grandchildren had joined him at the hospital.

One really wonders why Glenn wasn't chosen to fly any of the Gemini missions or even the early Apollo missions.

According to Tom Wolf in The Right Stuff Glenn was too popular to risk losing in further missions. His boyish and earnest persona had made him a celebrity, and NASA feared that if he were killed in a space mission, it might derail the entire U.S. manned space program.

I wasn’t politically aware in the 80s. I admired Glenn until the investigation of Chinese money and how the Clintons got it in the late 90s. I watched John Glenn sell his soul to Bill Clinton.

I would love to find out Glenn had repented. Hope he does before he dies.

He may not have been the only Senator to go into space, but he is still the oldest man to go into space (age 77).

Yeah...maybe his politics were reprehensible. However, his other accomplishments (at least to me) still make him a hero in my book.

When he passes, it’ll be the end of an era....the last of the Mercury Seven....the True Men of “The Right Stuff”.

lol, which reminds me of a famous line from the movie Patton.

Patton calls a Russian general an a$$hole and the russian say’s Patton is one too.

then Patton raises his glass to the russian and toasts him, one a$$hole to another.

Comment away, but your comment makes you look petty with an unfounded feeling of self importance.

“First man to orbit the earth. Not everyone gets to say that.”

I remember that day as if it was yesterday.

I was ironing in front of the big old black and white TV——they would keep giving his location and I would be ASTONISHED. He traveled about 2000 miles-—WHILE I WAS IRONING SHIRTS.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

Didn’t much admire your politics, but otherwise there have been few heroes and few genuine Americans like you. I hope that you recover and live for quite a number of additional years, but in any case, thank you for all that you did for this country.

I read the headlines and thought, “Tybalt and Mercutio, Shakespeare.”

I pray he knows the Lord.

The story was that during the Cold War, Glenn became such an American hero as the first American to orbit the Earth, that Kennedy barred him from future space flight because he didn't want to risk a mishap that killed Glenn.

Makes sense I guess. I have also also read stories about Medal of Honor recipients not being allowed back into combat. Seems kind of silly that the best men are sometimes taken from their greatest position.

The one thing that unites us as humans is the ability to achieve and create at the apex of human endeavors and still crawl willingly all the way to the bottom of the ethical gutter.

As Americans a lot of us have the “doing” part down pat, it’s crossing the finish line with our honor intact that’s apparently the tough part.

Let’s not forget John Glenn was also a member of the Keating 5. Maybe not the time to mention it, but it is part of his legacy.
