(CNN) - A budding musician. A truck-lover and bowling alley denizen. A singer whose adoring fans called him Nex Luguolo. A 17-year-old choir singer.

These are among the 36 people who lost their lives Friday night in a fire at an Oakland, California, warehouse where an electronic dance party was being held.

Overall, Ghost Ship was more about Music and Art most of the time. My CAD draftsman often displayed his digital/Surreal art there for sale.

The rave was apparently an illegal fund raiser. That kind of event needs sanitation, and professional security. Therein lies the major breakdown.

The event was advertised, so there is no excuse for the city not requiring a permit; somebody looked the other way.

I’m sorry those folks lost their lives and the city bears some responsibility. But the adults there had to know those were unsafe digs so they were playing with their own lives. Being artists, I can imagine there were chemicals and flammables being stored unsafely in that space. And without electricians and maintenance staff to keep the wiring and facilities to code, it was just a matter of time. I can’t imagine a responsible parent letting their kid anywhere near such a place if they knew their kid was hanging around there.

The first thing you do when you get into a crowded place is look for the exits. I have trained my kids to do this. Any trained eye should have seen this place was unsafe, alerting the visitor to leave immediately.

Another key piece of advice is, if something happens, do not wait for someone to lead the way, make a unilateral decision to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY should something happen. Never stand around rubbernecking, just leave immediately! It the Providence, RI tragedy, there was a 20 second time period in which the flames were spreading before the ceiling became engulfed. The trained attendee who immediately walked toward a pre located exit would most probably gotten out unharmed.

Oddly enough a lot of people associate nakedness with sex.

That's a reasonable association under most circumstances. Sex isn't the reason most of them went to that rave, though.

Regardless how it is phrased the MSM in California so far has shown no inclination to ask these questions. Suspect the owner was making some large contributions to prominent Democrats.

Thank you. I was starting to think I might be the only remaining person in the world who knows the correct definition of “beg the question”.

While the above statement is at least a mild exaggeration, I see the term used incorrectly by “journalists” about 10 times as often as I see it used correctly.

I am saddened at the story.

Reminds me of how we little kids used to like to construct blanket tent cities inside the house. Except this fantasy existence went on 24/7.

God remember them. Some of these lives may have been sad indeed. Never had a chance to really grow up because there weren’t any plausible mentors.

I imagine NY versions were more sanely regimented. You can be all the artiste you please, but you got to follow these rules or out you go. Certainly no room for pallet staircases. How did the slumlord collect his pay? That’s why I was questioning whether a commune like arrangement existed among the people in it. A kind of local anarchist government, if I may use the oxymoron.

Oh brother... when we start talking about doing the wrong thing the right way, we run into oxymorons right and left.

That is exactly the point. An 18-24 year old has a cryptic narcissism about them. “Nothing really bad will happen to me”. No matter how well you brought up your kids, the temptation of a young person to go to a party like that to have fun is overwhelming. After about age 30 they start acting more rationally and show proper caution. Never sleep well Saturday nights when my kids are “out with their friends”. Just pray. Have to feel for those parents who lost kids. Hope the city officials are held accountable for not enforcing the law.

Teaching kids sense has to begin early. An appreciation for the created order and what it was created for, has to be part of it. Not too tight; not too loose. Not too much; not too little. With a glory that is given from heaven in spite of its suffering.

If that worldview has not been presented by the time they are older, it might be too late, and we’re reduced to just praying.

Oakland does “the wrong thing” routinely.

But had there been responsible security there, it is unlikely the disaster would have happened.

San Francisco did it without calamity in the ‘60s at the Filmore.

I suspect if I were to spend 10 minutes alone with any of these folks I would be ready to strangle them with their own intestines. But no one deserves to die in this hideous manner. RIP, all of you.

I just got rid of squatters next door, what a nightmare. Constant stream of “alternative” homeless drifters. Drugs, porn, child abuse. All the same ingredients.

13 cop cars finally showed up to boot them. They had hotwired the electrical, could have burned the block down.

That’s to skate on thin ice at best, yet. Getting away with it on the average seems to be inversely related, in most cases, to how wicked it was.

Nothing is impossible with God.

Still, once that far in, their lives will become, let us say, an adventure. And not necessarily an excellent one.

From what I can tell, this guy Ion organized it, built the interior structure and charged rent to to finance his crappy art and lifestyle. I think he envisioned himself as a cult leader, but did not have much of a following.

He is a real POS.

There was an art commune/cult in my college town and they had a venue.

They were a pain to deal with, they wanted their crappy band to open and they ripped bands off.

We never played there.

Maybe some of them might even have charming stories to share... not all of them rabid lefties every moment of their waking lives... the art at least consuming most of their attention. It truly needs a concerted effort to push ALL the grace of God away.

But again, we can go to a museum or theater for art, and when the show is over we go home, letting the museum or theater take care of itself. When museum and theater IS home, that imparts a different point of view. All art; no point.
