Nixon and China
vanity

Posted on 12/04/2016 5:10:23 PM PST by GoldenState_Rose

"Opening relations with China" is considered to be one of the hallmark accomplishments of President Nixon's accomplishments.

In light of the controversy surrounding President-elect Trump's call to Taiwan, and the overall sense that there needs to be a dramatic re-adjustment of our relations with Beijing in general, I wanted to know what role President Nixon and his legacy has played for the better or the worse with regard to our long term interests...

How should we view China exactly?

After betraying Taiwan, who could ever trust the US again?

Trump DIDN”T place a call to Taiwan.
Its just another smear from the media.

And, when did we learn that China has anything to say about who we talk to ?

I just know I don’t like the current Chinese government because of its persecution of Christians and abortion policies...I do not know why we address or not address Taiwan as an independent state...

I don’t know about anyone else but I would rather have had Nixon stay home.

Relations with China were essential to defeating the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the USSR the US should have focused on splitting China in two instead of building her into a top notch economic, military, and political competitor.

We should continue to recognize the PRC as the one and only China. We should recognize Taiwan as the one and only Taiwan.
Not two Chinas but two separate, independent political entities with whom we look forward to having mutually beneficial relationships.

China controlled us to the point where even picking up the call was out of bounds. Trump changed that. It sounds so ridiculous but this was our policy since 1979

"Only Trump Could Go to Taiwan" will be the next.

The call was arranged. Who called who is irelevant. Question is what is the PRC’s next move?

While communists were killing Americans in Vietnam,Nixon was cozying up to communists in China. That was a betrayal, too.

".And, when did we learn that China has anything to say about who we talk to?"

I am glad you asked! John Bolton said that very thing in the last day or so! Isn't THAT refreshing?
