Diabetes is on the rise in the United States, and a new poll looks at where the disease is most and least common.

In the poll, from Gallup-Healthways, researchers surveyed a nationally representative sample of more than 176,000 Americans in all 50 states in 2015. The participants were asked whether they had ever been diagnosed with diabetes in their lifetime.

The three states with the lowest rates of diabetes were Utah, Rhode Island and Colorado. In these states, 7.5 to 8 percent of the survey participants said they had diabetes. In contrast, Alabama and West Virginia had the highest rates of diabetes, with about 16 percent of the participants in those two states saying they had been diagnosed with the disease.

The poll also looked at the rate of diabetes in cities nationwide. The city with the lowest rate of diabetes was Boulder, Colorado, where slightly less than 5 percent of residents said they had diabetes, followed by Bellingham, Washington, where about 6 percent said they had diabetes. The two cities with the highest rates of diabetes were Mobile, Alabama, and Charleston, West Virginia, where more than 17 percent of residents said they had diabetes. The results were published Wednesday (Nov. 30) in a report from Gallup-Healthways.

"Lower rates of diabetes could point to citizens of a particular state or community practicing healthier behaviors, which, in turn, could lead to better health outcomes and lower incidence of chronic conditions,"

333. Promised niece 320 by Christmas Eve.

I don’t break promises.

You can only be proud of losing 100 pounds for so long before you look like a fool.

I’d say at 14 months later, I’m beginning to sound like a fool with that boast.

Since I quit drinking soda pop containing high fructose corn syrup my blood tests have improved dramatically. I am not diabetic but I was headed that way.

Was 435 after being home a number of years recovering from injury and stuffing my face.

Got down to 335 July of 2015!!! That’s a LONG time ago and all it did was buy me some more years to lose at least another 100.

Time to move on from that accomplishment.

335 is BAD!!

But I just kept saying to myself it’s a lot better than 435 and stayed the same for 14 months.

It’s amazing what we humans can delude ourselves about.

Got it.

You’ve shown you can do it. Get your mind in the same place and lose another 100.

I’m struggling with the same thing, 280 -> 230, now stuck there for reasons in my head.

Let’s do it!!

Weird story.

I was 2 weeks away from weight loss surgery and at 435, was too heavy so they put me on a medifast liquid diet to lose 20 by the surgery.

Turns out they cancelled the surgery due to a “spot” on my lung. My Gastro who is also my primary said the new X Rays show nothing. “there’s nothing there”.

By that time, I was down about 30 and said to hell with the surgery :)

I still ate badly, just ate less portions of bad stuff!! Not such a great diet!!

Starting to eat healthier.

Thanks.

And to all those who have to lose weight, it IS tough, but it can be done.

I went to bed hungry many nights.

All the tricks in the world don’t fool your stomach... Water, rice cakes, whatever!

Your stomach knows the difference between real food, water and cardboard! :)

The poorest people tend to be the most obese in the US. I don’t think that has ever happened before in recorded history. What does that mean for any type of potential rebellion or uprising against the state? I mean has there ever been any type of uprising where the poor are like ours?

Wow that reminded me of my situation. I’m trying to lose weight since I am obese. I was told to lose 75 pounds so they can perform the surgery. I told my doctor “If I lose the 75 why even bother to go thru the surgery. I’ll just keep trying to lose the weight after 75”.

I know people who had the surgery but they have some weird side effect.

Malnutrition after surgery can occur if you don’t take all of the vitamins and supplements they say to take. If the new stomach doesn’t absorb them you get them through an IV.

And you’re absolutely right. Once I lost the 20, I said screw it. :)

The doctor told me a percentage of a percent of those who are above 400 ever see 200 again.

We two can be that percentage of a percent!!!!

States with higher rates of obesity will tend to have more diabetics.

Some people can be plump without having to be so overweight they can’t even walk.

That’s why God made stiff Harley springs.
