Terminally ill toddler was turned into cruel internet meme, mom says

As soon as her tiny baby boy was born, Jenny Smith knew something was wrong.

She could see it in the doctors’ faces, and she could hear it in her newborn son’s weak cry. Before the small-town mom from Ranburne, Alabama, could even hold newborn Grayson, doctors were whisking him away to a medical center in Atlanta, Georgia.

It was there she found out her baby was diagnosed with an array of serious problems: occipital encephalocele, craniosynostosis, micronathia, thumb hypoplasia, a cleft palate, hypospadias, congenital anomalies of the lower limbs, ASD of the heart, apnea, and he did not appear to be able to hear or see.

“They aren’t all terminal diseases,” Smith explained to CBS News. “But combine them all together... no other children compare to him. He’s the only child with all of these conditions combined.”

Good grief. Read the comment section to understand the limited intellect of CBS’s readers.

Then, take a shower.

God does not create junk.
God bless these people.
May he curse the demons who kill the innocent.

Just said an “Our Father” for Grayson and his family. Perfect prayer for this situation. I hope the family and friends find comfort in it.

He’s an angel sent to you all for a reason. God doesn’t make mistakes. Love him and raise him, every day is a blessing.

That’s right! They are put here on earth for a reason to be taken care of by special angels selected by God. God doesn’t make mistakes......

Agreed. I do not understand why people have the need to put every detail of their lives out there.

I get especially annoyed by the mothers who spend more time telling Fakebook land how much they love their children than they actually spend in taking care of those children. (I am not saying that was the case with this mother.)

This made me cry. I don’t “do” Facebook, and I don’t “do” Twitter. Both of these social media tools have brought all the scum to the surface, and you couldn’t pay me to swim in it. Bless that sweet little child, and his family.

I understand why the mother wanted support, but facebook might not have been the best place to find it.

I searched under “support groups for parents with disabled babies” and found quite a few options. I’m sure that there are many more, if one searches with the name of a specific illness.

People haven’t changed all that much - before the internet - the 80’s and before - you had jerks in town who called kids retard, parents gossiped about the family with the ‘mongoloid’ down the street. People from all walks would recoil from the sight of this child.

Now there’s just more a-holes exposed to seeing him, thus more comments. Who cares about them - look at all the support! It’s awesome!!

no, I think people should understand - you’re putting the picture out there for the world to see, you’re going to have some a-holes comment, but that is a small price to pay for the mountains of support you’ll get.

CBS - “quick!! find a victim story!!!”

“keep that stuff off of Facebook.”

Why should she keep her child’s picture off facebook?
I’ve seen worse in regular daycare. Children adjust. Too bad adults are not as accepting. There’s no need to hide her child.

i did not say she should hide her child, but maybe it’s not everybody’s business, either.
I’m very private. I f i don’t want input, I don’t tell people my problems/stories.

“Children adjust. Too bad adults are not as accepting. “

I’m really not sure children do adjust. Children are forced to accept it while in school but out of school all bets are off and kids do what they want. They bully other kids in the neighborhood and on social media. Special needs kids are included in this, sometimes more so.

We have no way of knowing if it was an adult who did this, I’m thinking it was a teen, could be wrong however.

I’m thinking she posted this as a support group for others like her. I understand where she’s coming from, it can be hard with a terminally ill baby and it’s best to have support.

Some people just like to be mean for the sake of being mean. My stepmom always said “it will all come home to you someday” when she would see people making fun of handicap persons.
