America was founded on genocide and slavery. Its economic prosperity came directly from the destruction of Native culture and lives, and then later from the importation of enslaved Black slaves from the West Indies and Africa. Even in the North and after abolition, Black people served as cheap labor forces for dangerous jobs. After abolition, prisons began using free labor from Black prisoners to manufacture goods. Blacks were incarcerated falsely or stood unfair trails at ridiculous rates so that they could once again provide free labor for the thriving American economy.
The history of this country is one story of economic or social exploitation after another, shrouded in rhetoric of freedom and gallantry.
I agree. I actually think it a good thing to look at the warts and try to gain some sort of understanding. Some things we may never truly understand. The problem with the critics is they already decided they hate America. So now if you point out the good things they will find a reason to ignore those or minimize them.
Here in Canada I was surprised at the pile on Trudeau when he praised Fidel Castro. Even leftist rags were making fun of Trudeau. However on Facebook, one friend made the claim that because our view of Cuba is colored by the United States, and that you can’t trust the US, that negates all negative narratives about Cuba. So now even facts don’t matter.
If your friend can't trust the US, who's he going to turn to when the SHTF? I'd say history sides with us as the most faithful ally against the bad guys.
If he wants to put his faith in Socialists, Communists, Democrats, or Islamists, then he deserves what he gets.
She is more of a friend of a friend. Where I live even Christians tend to be fairly socialist, which I could never understand. I think Canadians put their faith in either England or Europe. Which is misplaced since those places are even more effed up than Canada - if that was possible.
