The footnote says Hurlbut wrote for the New York Timas and was “brilliant erratic and unprincipled.” Today, he could go 2 for 3 and hold the same position.

“The Fall of Islam” was an interesting read. The lack of a Koranic doctrine of “render unto Ceasar” appears to be a permanent part of the religion. The inferiority of the secular leadership to the clerical is a prominent feature of Islamic society.

It was particularly interesting the analogy the author made between Islamic theocracy and the American doctrine of judicial review, where a court can declare a law unconstitutional. That is an analogy I have not made and one with which I am not entirely comfortable. But it is valid if one considers that in every Islamic state, the Koran, as interpreted by the Mad Mullahs, is in fact their organic constitutional law.

True. There's not a lot of brilliance in mainstream journalism these days.

Nothing in either library, and prices on Alibris.com are pretty high. I guess I'll have to live without knowing his insider dirt on political figures of the 50s and 60s.

December 11. Went to La Traviata. . . . Traviata is utter drivel. I could write as bad an opera myself. To call it bad is to do it more than justice; it has not strength enough to stand alone or to be anything. It is definable by the negation of every good quality.

The Diary of George Templeton Strong, Edited by Allan Nevins and Milton Halsey Thomas

Strong was not alone in giving thumbs down to Verdi’s masterpiece during the early years (it was first performed in 1853). The following Wikipedia entry, to my surprise, cites George Templeton Strong’s diary, but not the same entry I posted above. What goes on? In the editor’s preface it says, “And though we give numerous excerpts from his discriminating criticism of concerts, oratorios, and operas, again an interesting volume of musical comment could – and some day will – be compiled from the diary.” Maybe that volume of musical comment was indeed published and that is where the citation comes from.

December 18. Very great big party at William B Astor’s Monday night, and another last night at John C. Hamilton’s. Both were favorable specimens of their bad class, particularly the former.

John Church Hamilton’s mother had died just a couple of years earlier, and his biography of Alexander Hamilton was being published. He seems to have been a dilettante, although very busy with his family.

When John Jacob Astor Sr. died in 1848, William became the richest man in America.

Golly!

I wonder if his parties were any fun.

I've never been to one, but from what I've heard they were particularly favorable specimens of their bad class.

I would think that rich-people Christmas parties would be pretty amusing, but I suppose if you’re used to it, you can be all persnickety.

Just to let you know I’ve been reading the arguments in Dred Scott with great interest. While it seems that Blair put stock in the legal principle that asoldier took the domicile of the state where he is stationed, Blair could not easily make that argument today. Soldiers assigned to military posts are allowed to keep home state driver’s licenses and retain voting registration in their home states, which along with payment of primary taxes are the main iincidents of domicile.
