Black man tried to intimidate me for money yesterday
Personal experience | 30 November 2016 | Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin

Posted on 11/30/2016 7:35:02 AM PST by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

It has never happened to me like this before. Yesterday, I stopped at a little taqueria just east of Austin to get something to eat. As I was waiting, a big, stocky black guy holding a roll of paper towels under his arm came up to me and asked me if I wanted my windshield cleaned for $1. I said, "No, I'm good." He kept on, saying "Hey, just give me $1. Can't you see I'm trying to work to get money for a taco?"

I politely declined, telling him my finances were tight due to car repairs and trying to pay for school for my son. He began to get upset and then looked at me and said, "You're racist!" and some other babble I didn't quite catch. He looked at my wedding ring and said he used to have one, but he sold it. I asked him, "How can I be racist if my wife is a native of Mexico?" "Why would I marry a Mexican if I were racist?" He shot back, "She's not black!"

The poor little woman in the taco trailer told him she'd make him a taco for free(to shut him up) and he settled down. Now, my question is this: Is this a hate crime, trying to extort money off of people as they go to a taco trailer trying to get something to eat? What if I were to have tried that on someone? Police probably would have been called. This has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. I blame Obama and all Democrats for this. They have so divided people that a lot of blacks have been enabled in treating everyone else in an abusive manner. My CCW was in the car which kept me from telling the man what I wanted to tell him and things probably would not have ended well for the street thief. How sad to put oneself in a position to die over trying to extort $1 off of someone. This nation is going to hell in a handbasket.

I carry a few extra dollar bills in my pocket, just for this. There are many homeless still in downtown Houston who troll the bus stops at 5:00pm every day. I've come to recognize the regulars, and sadly, they've come to recognize me.

Still, I do well enough that I can afford a few dollars every now and then.

“Turbo?”

Not yet. Stock 3.8 liter V6.

Cops around here park with radar/laser or they pace you (always check your six). They usually give you some leeway unless you’re doing something really stupid.

Only 2 ways for that scenario to go. You are either gonna part as friends or have to break leather to end it..

...if you didnt leave it in your car.

Yeah. I had a cop tell me they don’t bother unless you’re going 15 over, except for extenuating circumstances. He just wanted my FRS.

On a side note, he may have been looking out for it. Cars get “known” around here. :-)

Yeah, I’m sure I’ll hear “we finally caught you!” when they...finally catch me.

I’m assuming you are being sarcastic. But if you are not, my perspective is that you must never give it to them, if only to reduce that activity. They only do it because it pays.

Around here people know cars. I’d passed that same cop quite a few times but he was never able to “get” me. I think he just saw his chance. I’m careful on that particular road now. They patrol it extremely agressively. The fact that it took him three years and it’s been quiet for me now for over two is a good thing. :)

There have been times that I have helped some people, but there is some discernment involved. Such as when someone needed money for gas, I bought the gas. Some I’ve given extra groceries.

I disagree.

I had a white Pan handler go nuts on me in San Francisco.

I ignored him and he went nuts because he took it as a lack of respect, like I thought he didn’t exist, no respect. We stood there shouting at each other, then parted. It was very close to a fist fight.

After that I thought I would give respect and answer.

Fast forward 10 years.

I’m near Atlanta and my car breaks down. I’m walking down a street, late at night, all black neighborhood and I’m white as snow. Black guy stops me, asks for money, maybe 25 years old. Stopped what I’m doing looked through my pockets, I have nothing. He says “At least you tried” and he let’s me pass. I’m sure if I ignored him he would have beat me to a pulp.

Yep. Attitude will get you a long way in life. I had a guy head for me in the grocery store parking lot once. I pointed my finger at him and said (Sam Kinnison voice) No! He must veered off and walked away.

My then 16 year old daughter came home crying one day. Some bum accosted her in a drugstore parking lot near our house, followed her to her car and tried to open the door after she got in.

I reminded her of her pepper spray. She was actually reaching for it as she got in the car.

We went to the Drug Store, a Walgreen’s and I spoke with the manager. He said they called the cops often and run them off.

His suggestion: Don’t wait so long for the pepper spray next time. I kind of liked that guy. He gave good advice.

Florida is a CCW state.
If you feel threatened it is legal to display a weapon.
Further action is acceptable if perp persists.
Easy deal, no B.S.

She showed the corset ones too. Her facebook page is really interesting. It was just a suggestion, though. :)
My purse has the vertical pocket on the outside so I can carry easily.

I would have been glad to have given him $1 if he would have continued in an humble way. He escalated the entire scene to one of abuse quickly. I de-escalated it, but am unhappy with how he talked to me.

You missed a great opportunity

All depends on attitude.

I have a former life (that I shared with M.Kehoe) that gave me skills in assessing the motivations of street-folk.

If they are in genuine trouble, I will help....and I have.

If they are hustling for their next hit of narcotics or their next beer, move along.

Jesus commands us to love God, love ourselves, and love our neighbors

Now tell me what love is. And it is not what you think it is, it is MORE.

Mal 1:2 “I have always loved you,” says the LORD. But you retort, “Really? How have You loved us?” And the LORD replies, “This is how I showed My love for you: I loved your ancestor Jacob,

Can’t you just see, feel, hear the sarcasm is that, “Really..........” It is almost, go love someone else because this is too hard.

Why is it hard? Because the expectations are so high. It is CONDITIONAL.

My personal experience is the ones who said, “you poor thing..........” Didn’t love me. The ones who said “you can do better than this” truly love me.

And that is God’s message to us. YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS.

Now the second half of Mal 1:2 also is an interesting definition of love. And the usual response to it is - that’s not fair!
