Trump is right about the flag. Do NOT disrespect it in public

Seem Mr. Trump correctly pointed out that folks in this country who feel the need to disrespect our flag in any form or fashion need to refrain from doing so, at least publicly. He is correct.

Countries garner respect for defending their territory, their culture and their language, all of which make a country a country. We seem to be failing on all counts. In Mexico, if you trash their flag in public, you will be beaten and/or killed by the public who sees you doing so BEFORE the police can even get there. Or, in Thailand, do something to publicly defame or embarrass the king (it is a constitutional monarchy, but a democracy as a base) and see what happens to you. Go to France and start insisting that people speak English. Better yet, go to the Middle East and stomp on a symbol of islam.

If a nation allows people to disrespect icons of the culture or the culture itself, then in the very next action, the one doing the disrespecting will turn on the people of the nation itself. That is what is happening in the United States. We have foolishly allowed ourselves on the pretense of "Freedom of Expression" to become the victims of a complete and total assault on our entire national identity and subsequently our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Someone has to turn this all around. Either become loyal to the United States or face severe consequences, or better yet, get out. The KLBJ radio station in Austin had a talk show this morning discussing disrespect toward the American flag. When a caller tried to mention how Mexico deals with people who disrespect their flag, the caller was cut off. The media is becoming part of the PROBLEM. The men and women who run the media need to get the message that the people are NOT going to allow our nation and culture to be disrespected in their drive for more advertising dollars.

I think the SCOTUS ruled that burning the flag is protected free speech.

Settled law, Supreme Court.....

If part of a protest, free speech.....

We are the only country in the world to allow it.....

.....and we are much stronger for it....

I am with Scalia on this one.

So am I, burning the flag has been long noted as political speech. Actually, I think it's passé, and shows a lack of imagination on the part of the protestors.

Of course, should I be near such a protest, I will assert my rights to do whatever necessary to protect our flag.

I’m with Scalia too. I’m a big free speech guy. I would never disgrace the flag in anyway and find those that do abhorrent but protections of speech and conscience are more important.

Agreed. Trump should focus on reforming our government to remove the institutionalized leftism and collectivist corruption.

Yes. The law needs to be changed regarding the flag. No more public disrespect of the flag here.

When Government outlaws peaceful political expression, no matter how moronic or distasteful, that is a sign of weakness and insecurity.

Here is what I don’t understand:

If I were to go to some unpleasant section of, let’s say, Baltimore, and I were to approach a gentleman who might be leaning against a fence, and if I address that man with the “n-word”, I suspect that fisticuffs would ensure. And if this matter were to come to the court’s attention, I suspect that my use of “fighting words” would work against me.

Why is it not the case that burning the flag is so different? I consider such a sight to be the equivalent of “fighting words”.

The “settled law” argument drives me crazy. Nothing is settled than can be amended, repealed, or overturned, which is plenty.

Trump is just sucking all the media oxygen out of the room to control the narrative, relax. Its a media rope-a-dope tactic. Enjoy watching them twist.

Exactly. Burn a rainbow flag at a gay parade. This stuff has to stop.

Not that I necessarily support making flag burning illegal, but, the Hypocrisy of the left, as usual is just as stunning as the lack of basic research by the “talking heads” of the LSM.

Basic research reveals that Trump was NOT the first prominent person to support such a bill, and in 2005....

“The Flag Protection Act of 2005 was a proposed United States federal law introduced by Senators Bob Bennett (R-UT) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY).

The law would have prohibited burning or otherwise destroying and damaging the US flag with the primary purpose of intimidation or inciting immediate violence. It called for a punishment of one year in jail and a fine of $100,000.[1][2][3]

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, the act was summarized as such:

Amends the federal criminal code to revise provisions regarding desecration of the flag to prohibit: (1) destroying or damaging a U.S. flag with the primary purpose and intent to incite or produce imminent violence or a breach of the peace; or (2) stealing or knowingly converting the use of a U.S. flag either belonging to the United States or on lands reserved for the United States and intentionally destroying or damaging that flag.[4]

Since the law was not passed nor considered by the United States Congress, its constitutionality was not challenged by the Supreme Court; the bill was never assigned to committee.[5]

However, the bill’s language was designed so as to prohibit the desecration of a flag when the intent was found to be a threat to public safety, the intention being that it would therefore not violate the First Amendment and not be declared unconstitutional[” - Reference Wikipedia
