The 5 Best-Selling Handguns of 2016
The Motly Fool ^ | 26 Nov, 2016 | Leo Sun

2016 looks like it will be a record year for gun sales. The number of NICS background checks for firearm purchases has risen annually for 18 straight months, hitting 22.2 million at the end of October versus 23.1 million in 2015.

Analysts expect Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ:SWHC) and Sturm Ruger (NYSE:RGR) -- the only two publicly traded gunmakers in the U.S. -- to respectively grow their revenues by 26% and 13% this year. Let's take a look back at the five top selling handguns of the year, as listed by Gunbroker.com, and what they tell us about today's American firearm market.

1. Smith & Wesson M&P Shield The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield, which was introduced in 2005, is a lightweight, concealable pistol which is encased in a polymer frame. The Shield comes in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 full auto calibers, and is widely used by law enforcement and military personnel. The Shield is often praised for its slim profile, ergonomics, ease of use, and overall accuracy. As a striker-fired pistol, it lacks a protruding hammer in the back, making it easier to conceal and carry.

The M27 is a fine pistol, but a little light for .357.

The DA trigger is a consistent, steady pull until the hammer drops. And you only notice the recoil.

Most folks can shoot them DA as well as they can SA. Or nearly so.

I have several other 9mm’s, but the Hi-Power is my favorite.
I’ve shot all the newer guns, nothing beats the Hi-Power, imho.

I never shot a Hi-Power, but I have heard very good reviews. Seems like an all-time great design.

The model 27 is made on the large N frame. It is the same frame size as the .44 magnum model 29. It is the heaviest frame S&W made up until those huge 50 calibers.

The XD’s have safety features that that are not evident on Glocks.

What features supersede the trigger guard, a positive retention holster, and the shooter's trigger finger? They're the only ones for my Ruger LC9s Pro.

My Brownings are better than average on accuracy and have been 100% on reliability. Mine are fairly early models with the smaller safety levers. I wish they were a little easier to hit but with practice it can be done quickly.

The triggers on both are just mediocre. Not bad but no where near as good as a good revolver in single action.

There are two things I really do like about them. They fit my hand better than any other pistol and that was before I improved the grip even more with Hogue rubber grips. Also for some reason, I have always been lucky when shooting it while hunting.

45mm should take your arm off with recoil.

My wife and I both have the XDM 9mm with the 5.25” barrel. It's so accurate it almost isn't fair.

BHP’s are great rigs and mec-gar makes great and reliable 15 round mags for them as well as 18 round mags for the Sig P226.

147gr Speer Gold Dot HP is “THE” best 9mm fodder .

5 best handguns of mine are in no special order...

1. Glock 19, 9mm
2. Colt 1911A1, 45 acp
3. Browning Highpower 40SW converted back to 9mm
4. Hk P9s in 45 acp
5. SW model 13-3

Honorable mention / Miss Congeniality = Ruger Redhawk 44 mag, stainless, 5”.

I’ve got the Gl 19 and Springfield XDs .45.
The .45 is my backup and has very manageable recoil for a small large caliber. Neither has ever failed.
It fits in the front pocket of blue jeans.

“Not well written. Author states increased sales in 2016, but numbers cited were higher for 2015.”

That jumped out at me, too, but it looks like it’s 22.2 million as of October 2016 vs. 23.1 million for the whole of 2015. On track to beat it.

They did not state the 2015 time frame so you are left to guess if it is for the same time or different times.

normal EDC is a GLOCK 26 +1 and 2 spare mags plus other stuff. occasionally GLOCK 19 and rarely, other than around the house, GLOCK 42 (.380). my 26 is usually the smallest gun in my training classes but it’s what i carry most.

did my part to bolster RUGER stock. bought an AR-556 with a Vortex SPARC AR red dot last month.

Only has one of my three buys for the year, so far. But my next four aren’t on that list.
