What Your Favorite Rifle Cartridge Says About You
American Hunter (NRA) ^ | 6 Mar, 2015 | Philip Massaro

Posted on 11/22/2016 5:24:01 PM PST by MtnClimber

We all have a favorite, regardless of what our intended quarry may be; that one rifle cartridge that is near and dear to us. Just as our favorite colors can be indicative of our personalities, our favorite rifle cartridge can tell an awful lot about us as shooters. Let us begin, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

1. .223 Remington This is the Banty rooster of the bunch, the case with the Napoleonic complex; you embrace it believing you can take on the whole world with a microscopic cartridge, and you may just be right. You have no desire, whatsoever, to hear of any other centerfire cartridge, because your level of self confidence when armed with the .223 will send tactical zombie elephants running for their lives, wetting themselves at the very sight of your AR…

2. .270 Winchester You are a gentleman, carrying your head high, while rocking a vintage red plaid wool hunting suit. Your claim to fame is the ability to sculpt an effigy of Jack O’Connor out of instant mashed potatoes at the deer camp table. Thirty caliber? Never heard of her.

3. .30-’06 Springfield You’re the first born child, the apple of mommy’s eye. Although you never made the Dean’s list, mama hung every one of your art projects on the fridge, proud as a peacock. You did pretty well in life, and although you may not be the shining star you once were, you’re as loyal as a mutt, consistent and trustworthy. Modern bullets have given you a new lease on life, sort of like Viagra or Just For Men gel.

4. .308 Winchester You are the middle child, the defiant one, who always lives in the shadow of your older brother, the ’06, but the two of you don’t speak at family parties.

Most learn on the .22 LR.

One of the most efficient and useful cartridges ever created.

Highly underrated.

I’m kinda partial to the .243, but only because I have a Mauser Model 3000 standing in the corner and that’s what it holds...

Also have a soft spot for marlin lever action 30-30, and the .357 is really nice too.

But I guess my all time favorite is the old reliable .22...not a lot it won’t do, fairly quiet, not expensive to feed. I wouldn’t take it on a bear or wild hog hunt...but it can handle almost anything else.

“I shoot 8MM Mauser - not on the list”

Rather nasty round. An acquaintance of mine, huge collector, brought some Egyptian Hakim? rifle to the range a while back. The Germans used it a lot in WWII. That Mauser round can kick good, can only imagine the damage it did to our GI’s

The Springfield Armory rifles all seem to be top grade. I have never had a FTF with mine even testing functionality of around 30 magazines.

It kicks a bit and you feel it when you shoot an old Mauser with the metal butt plate but it’s like any other big bore, just ride it rather than fight it and it’s certainly shootable. I’m sure it’s a hard hitter as is the 7MM Mauser (7x57) which might be a better round as it’s flatter shooting. Still, I understand its ballistics are pretty close to the 30-06.

Back when I was just out of college I bought 3 guns from someone at my same company. I bought a 50-70 Sharps Carbine, A Colt New Model Police 36 cal percussion cap revolver and a Colt 45ACP Series 70 Gold Cup. I still have all. Rifles or pistols, The Gold Cup is my favorite. I bought all the upgrade parts I wanted and had a gunsmith fit all of it. I have never fired a finer gun.

Hmm...”7 x 57 Mauser. You are boring. Boring, boring. And you’re only interested in meat. No romance, no excitement, you’re pathetic. But well-fed.”

I forgot to add, I negotiated a price of $300 for each gun, but that was years ago.

7.5x55 is fun to shoot. For a while there, surplus Swiss was cheaper than 5.56.

GP11 is still reasonably priced - and beautiful ammo indeed. Pity the brass is Berdan primed.

I re-barrelled both my 98 and 95 Mausers to 7x57. I used a Madsen machine gun bbl on the 95 and it’ll shoot nice cloverleaf groups at 100 if I do my part.

My first rifle at age 18 was a .270, Remington 700 ADL. That was 39 years ago. It is still in perfect condition and drives tacks.

Excellent pictures!

Over my 83 years I have tried to make sure I have every caliber long gun I could afford.

Thus, whatever ammo the zombies are were using can be used in my inventory...(Or, eventually, in my grandchildren's inventories).

I also try to have guns in every popular caliber, and I try to have two or more.

Thanks for looking at my home page pictures!

Haha, spot on. Only problem is my older brother, who has become (inexplicably) a raving lib, used a 6mm.

That was my favorite rifle...Shoots where you aim it...Used it to drop white tail, Mule deer and antelope...Dropped an Elk with a 270...First buck with a 44 magnum...Killed deer also with with a 35, 16 ga., buckshot, 30-30, 243 and a couple other calibers...Felled an 8 inch pine tree with a 375 H&H...Owned a 444 and a few others not mentioned...First rifle was a British 303...

Still have a soft spot in my heart for the 6mm...
