The day the 911 network stood still

The frail, legacy emergency 911 network in the United States was accidentally brought to its proverbial knees recently by a teenager looking for an Apple iOS bug

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, an apparent Telephony Denial of Service (TDoS) attack was brought against several cities that brought 911 to a grinding halt.

The incident triggered a response from the Department of Homeland Security's National Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Center National Coordinating Center for Communications (NCIC/NCC) and a Watch Advisory for a TDoS attack on public-safety answering points (PSAP) was issued just after lunch.

Investigators were led to a web page created by 18-year-old, Phoenix-based Meetkumar Hiteshbhai Desai. Desai said he was merely looking for bugs in Apple's iOS in an attempt to capture a reward from Apple as part of its bug bounty program. Apple launched this long-awaited program in September, and the company is offering five different categories of reward prizes:

The claim is a programmer, seeking an iOS bug to win an Apple bug bounty, created a webpage script that caused iPhones that clicked on it to repeatedly loop call 911 over and over again causing a denial of service attack on 911 services, with the only way to stop dialing was to force quit the iPhone (I think you can force quit the phone app.) or remove the battery! I frankly don't believe the programmer's excuse. This type of script could work on any phone. I think it was a deliberate act. — PING!

Thanks to Loud Mime for the head's up. Ping to Dayglored and ThunderSleeps for their lists.

Right. 911 was just accidentally used. It could have been ANY number but he chose 911. Yep, just an accident. You betcha.

or remove the battery!

One does not just remove a battery from an iPhone, it takes special tools and a bit of time.

Last place I lived, there was no 911 service. I never thought there were places without it until I lived there.
Place I live at now has it but with a 25 minute or more wait....not much use.

He’s a Hindu, not a Muslim.

Isn’t anyone else concerned about how vulnerable our systems are? We would be absolutely devastated in a cyberwar.

I read (and searched the article) and there is no mention that he is either Hindu or Muslim. You may be assuming from the name he is Hindu, but while demographics of India may be on your side just from the name, the fact still exists that 10% of the world’s Muslim are contained in India.

I know how to do it. I’ve even done without the “Tool” but it’s not like older “just pop the release and remove it” phones.

I can tell just from his name. A Muslim from India would not call himself that; it’s practically guaranteed that he comes from a Hindu background.

Folks were yugely disappointed when they were unable to call 911 after the pizza guy delivered anchovy instead of pepperoni pizza.

And, if I were to assume some other name that seems to me to be clearly a prominent black name, I’d be in deep water then? No shoals or sandbars? Free sailing then?
