Iraq Moves Its Thermobaric Rocket Tanks to Mosul
War is Boring ^ | October 26, 2016 | Robert Beckhausen

Iraqi troops fighting for Mosul’s outskirts have brought along one of their most fearsome weapons — the 60-ton, Russian-made TOS-1A Buratino. A photograph and tweet from the Jerusalem Post’s Seth Frantzman shows Iraqi troops posing with the rocket launcher near Bartella, a battle-scarred Assyrian Christian town less than 10 miles from Mosul. Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service troops took over the town on Oct. 20, one of dozens freed since the offensive began Oct. 16.

We do the same thing, to an extent. Our bridging vehicle was based on the M-60 chassis and the Sgt. York was a rehashed M48. The reason we spend time on new vehicle designs is that we invariably find fatal flaws in older systems and have a robust compete system that chases new requirements.

A better view of their MLRS thing:

I wouldn't want that sucker looking for me.

They reused captured Russian equipment, too.

You should spend some time reading Rommel's accounts of his North Africa campaign. The Axis and Allies traded armor and other vehicles quite often.

“That monstrosity would flip over if it were to be fired...”

I think it’s in production, so it’s probably passed that test. :)

This is a 2A83 experimental vehicle putting a 152mm gun on a T-72 chassis. I wouldn’t want this thing looking for me either.

The Russians will stick anything on a T-72 chassis, won’t they?

They don't have defense industry lobbyists insisting that every system be 100% new and incompatible with old systems.

I dunno, some things just don't get tested...

of course a MASSIVE amount of them were lost after mechanical breakdown.

But your point is still valid.
