A University of Maine professor has died while conducting research in Antarctica.
The university says 50-year-old Gordon Hamilton died Saturday when the snowmobile he was riding hit a crevasse and he fell 100 feet. He had been in Antarctica doing research for the National Science Foundation. His work focused on the role of ice and glaciers in the climate system.

I thought global warming had already melted the ice.
Any pumas?
Frozen stiff...
Research or free vacation?
What a waste! He didn’t have to go anywhere to learn that the sun is in charge of our climate. If he had any sense at all, he’d have known that scientific fact while he was still in Orono.
I could think of much better places for a vacation.
Peeps are allowed to burn fossil fuel in Antarctica? The place could just melt down.
How can this be? algore, the ignorant, said all ice in the universe would melt be now?
Regardless of whether or not the sun is in charge, there is an awful lot “we” do not understand about glaciology. Such knowledge is valuable, regardless of how politicized the subject matter may turn out to be.
Whether or not we need a lot of late middle age academics riding snowmobiles around Antarctica to acquire such knowledge is a different question.
Awful way to die.
Water gets cold...it freezes! Any questions?
Even in summer, Antarctica is not a pleasant place. Regardless of how fascinating the science research might be, the conditions are grueling. The weather is brutal, and you can die just from going outside if you’re careless, never mind falling in a crevasse.
What a waste of a perfectly good snow machine
I guess only 96% of scientists instead of 97% agree man causes AWG...
Poor guy died for a farce...
I guess he learned something about glaciers, unfortunately a little late.
OK, I can't stand the fact that he's a global warming nut. That being said, it was a horrible way for any human being to die, and I'm not going to make fun of his death. Falling 100 feet would be like falling from a 10-story window.
“Regardless of whether or not the sun is in charge, there is an awful lot we do not understand about glaciology”
One thing I do understand is that, true or not, there is NOTHING we can do about it.
Oh, by the way, the sun is in charge, and God controls the sun.
If you want to have an impact on climate change, your only hope is to PRAY.
You're not kidding! Wedged tightly in between two frozen ice walls deep below. And when you squirm in a vain in an attempt to somehow survive, you go further down.
