Aside from a barbed wire fence or a CCTV camera, a 'Beware Of The Dog' sign can be seen as a legitimate security step.
But these hilarious photos show that the supposedly terrifying canines intended to scare off potential burglars may not be so dangerous.
From two adorable fluffy Pomeranians to a disinterested cat and even a moose, the reality - and wonderful irony - of what lurks behind the threatening sign has been exposed.

Oh, I thought two were trained to be cute so that the third one can do what guard dogs are supposed to do.
Naw, they’re all naturally cute. And they love people. Dogs with the right genetic equipment can be trained to protect only when necessary.
In my experience, “Beware of dog” signage isn’t driven so much by vicious dogs as by vicious lawyers.
Well, and sometimes people who want to do something more to ward off intruders.

I worked in a porn shop in Austin in the 80’s. Hey they needed a cashier and it paid good...Night shift, I closed down the place. they had a Doberman that had to be put inside to ward off burglars. Damn thing nearly licked me to death every night...I don’t think that dog would hurt anyone if he had to. And I hate dogs...He jumped up to get petted one night and I had white pants on, I went home with huge brown paw prints on my pants, it was very muddy after a good rain. I don’t want to think about what else was mixed in...
Then a few years ago my uncle went to someone’s house to check on a job we might be hired to do. He walked up to the door and knocked, no answer. Several times. So he turned around to leave and found a large German Sheperd blocking the porch steps. And it would not back off. He went to the end ofr the porch. Dog followed, stayed in front of him. OK...other end of the porch...dog stayed in front...
He finally sat down and gave up. The dog was NOT going to let him leave. Never barked, low growl once, that’s it. When the owner finally showed up after about a half hour he was petting their dog on the porch, surprised them, that almost never happened. But he finally managed to make friends.
It turned out this dog was from a long line of police dogs, and trained in German. He only understood German commands. You could try in English all day long, he had no idea what you were saying. His owner could use German commands and the dog would do anything he wanted, including eat your lunch. Legitimate police training, not simple layman’s yard dog. He’d let you in, no way you were going to leave. Unless you like hospitals...And never, ever barked. One low growl is all you heard, at that point you were in trouble...you weren’t leaving until his owner said stand down. Period. Better hope he’s not gone for the weekend...

Same dog’s son lived across the street a few houses down, we did a job there too. Homeowner was a local Sheriff’s Deputy. Great guy. I was warned about this dog, I thought here we go again...I don’t get along with big dogs. I’ve been bit a dozen times, usually for no reason at all, and don’t like dogs a bit. One bit me when we parked at a yard sale, no reason whatsoever, just ran up and bit my right leg, tore up my jeans and socks. Several have chased and bit me while riding a bicycle.
So we turned up for the first day of the job, this almost full grown German Sheperd ran to the fence. I knew he came from a long line of trained police dogs and was worried, he wasn’t trained yet.
So I walked over to the fence and put out my hand so he could sniff me, they go by smell more than anything else. He sniffed my hand, jumped up and wanted to be petted. I wasn’t taking any chances, I scratched between the ears for a minute, then we walked in. I could tell he was being friendly.
I walked across the yard and found a 3lb red Folgers coffee can lying on the ground. Little did I know what I was about to start, I picked it up.
The dog ran over and grabbed it, took off running, turned around and looked at me, then ran by me almost close enough I could grab it...I figured this one out pretty quick...I finally managed to grab it, the tug of war was on.
That went on every day, the job lasted 3 weeks or so. He decided I was his best buddy the second I picked up that coffee can. When we had lunch on the back porch, he would lay beside me with is head resting on my leg. Followed me around the yard every time I went outside. His owner tried to call him one day during lunch, the dog laid there and looked at him...Refused to go to his owner...stayed laying against my leg.
We went back several months later to check on another small one day job, 3 or 4 hours max. I walked in the gate, the dog recognized me instantly, same story all over again. Instant tug of war.
I finally heard about a year later he had bit a kid, was sent back to his original owner, and had to be kept in a pen after that, just turned into a mean dog overnight for no reason anyone could figure out. Even the owner was wary around him.
I don’t think I would have approached the dog in the B&W pic, near the end.
Many years ago I read an article about funny classified ads. One was about a German Shepherd being given away to the first responder.
The reporter was the first at the scene, an old country store. He asked the owner why he was giving the dog away. The owner said that his store had been broken into twice before, so he got the dog to guard the place.
About a week later, the store was broken into again. The dog slept through the burglary, but when the authorities arrived, the dog woke up and bit the sheriff.
My dog would’ve held the flashlight.
