Charleston is an old hand at this—
I’m in Mt Pleasant, there are 12 units in my apartment complex, most left yesterday, another couple today.
The nice lady opposite Mrs Geronimo and I are the only people left to ride this out...stay tuned!
The current reports on weather dot com seem to make zero sense. They are carrying on about the danger from super strong winds along the coasts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina while showing a map with wind zones running from twenty miles per hour up to a worst case of fifty to sixty MPH in Florida. Most of the map indicates no more than a strong breeze that would not scare any but the most timid of old ladies. They do show potential rainfall up to fifteen inches in some areas and storm surge up to nine feet but the commotion about the wind makes me wonder if someone is crazy. So far this seems to be a case of total over reaction. No wonder people are getting ticked off. It seems absurd to talk about evacuating ONE QUARTER of the population of the state of South Carolina. This evacuation may be the most expensive thing about this storm. They act as if it will be worse than Hugo here while showing maps that indicate no such thing.
At this time, yes it won’t be anything like Hugo for SC but they didn’t “know” days ago. The projected paths a couple of days ago was predicting Hurricane Matthew to directly strike the SC coast at a category 3. Plenty of folks who rode out Hugo went to bed with it
I’m not a fan of Haley at all but after the Hurricane Floyd disaster of I-26 & I-526 because of Governor Hodges (d), I think Governor Haley was trying to play it safe. I can’t say I blame her, as it takes significant time to evacuate the bedridden, sick, elderly, college students who have nowhere to go, preparations and to start setting up shelters.
I always think back to Gov. Hodges and Hurricane Floyd anytime I consider an evacuation. I’d rather die in my home than in a vehicle stuck on I-26.
As Louisiana found out during Katrina, you CAN'T move millions of people inland in just a couple of hours. The highways just turn into parking lots.
It is prudent to send the wives and kids ahead while the storm is still a day or two away.
It’s amazing that even my fellow SC folks who stayed through Hugo and got stuck on I-26 with Floyd can’t seem to comprehend what you posted.
Ain’t that the truth. I tried to take my garbage to the county collection center yesterday and it is closed until Monday because of the Hurricane, along with all schools and government offices. Not a cloud in the sky.
People want to be home to do their preparations BEFORE it hits.
Never rely on the government to save you.
I can understand that for the coastal counties. I live in Lexington County, over 100 miles from the coast. Everything is closed. They even cancelled my sister’s dialysis until Sunday.
