The Glock 19 is now the only and official sidearm for Marine special operators as officials ditched the classic .45-caliber Colt 1911, the Marine Corps Times reported last week.
We put our money behind the 9mm round fired by an extremely well-trained marksman carrying a Glock 19, said Maj. Nick Mannweiler, a spokesman for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. He added the 9mm Glock is the only pistol Marine special operators are allowed to take into battle.
Since last year, MARSOC has purchased and fielded 1,654 Glock 19s because Raiders needed a reliable secondary weapon that could be used for both a concealed carry profile and a low-visibility profile, and having one approved pistol for all special operators saves money, he said.
Based on lessons learned in our operations, we also took into consideration how well a round could penetrate objects of varying densities and in different environmental conditions, Mannweiler said. We concluded that a 9mm round suited our needs.
In June, the Federal Bureau of Investigation also began transitioning from .45 to 9mm handguns. The Bureau awarded Glock an $85 million contract for Glock 19 and 17 handguns that would outfit other law enforcement agencies under the Justice Department and all Offices of Inspector General.
Why?
It absorbs the recoil better than plastic guns.
I have tried quite a few and have not found one that shoots as well as a Hi-Power or a 1911.
I’m a Browning fan.
Every Sunday you will find me at the Church of John Moses Browning for services of at least 100 rounds. ;)
Thats silly talk from an old special operations sort like you......:o)
Glocks are fine ..... I’m a horrible gun snob, carried a 1911A1 or a Browning High Power during my 22 years in EOD. Liked em both, served me well all over the world. Now I carry a simple Glock 19 with 147gr Speer Gold Dot HP’s as my concealed carry rig. Do possess a few 1911A1 BBQ guns, engraved, deep cold blue, ivory grips for formal occasions . But my utility workhorse is a Glock 19.
Glad to see USMC go Glock 19 as well.
***** Continue with the “”ounces is pounds concept”” of lightening the load on all servicemen an women who hump a ruck for a living.
Stay Safe !
What sidearm did your group carry back in the day?
Oh, well, by all means! Absorbing recoil is MUCH more important than all the other factors polymer brings to the table....
:-)
+1
Have them on a G22 and G21 SF (duty waepon); completely changed the way they feel...made them...”right”
Still, nothing fits my hand like a 1911.
My 1911 hits bowling pins at 75 yards. Haven’t found a plastic gun that I can do that with.
My group was just ST-2 in the 80s. Different answer at UDTs or ST-2 in Cali. But we used, believe it or not, the S+W Model 39, with barrels threaded for “hush puppies.”
We also had, again believe it or not, all kinds of odds and ends like S&W .38s from the Humphrey Bogart era I think. True. On the west coast, they were using 1911s.
We could carry personal side arms, which helped a lot. But each team had its own bizarre ancient unexplainable supply chain, depending on local personalities and other quirks of fate.
I think the Glock 19 is a terrific choice as a “universal pistol” to train the troops on. It’s the most common 3rd-world black-market battlefield-pickup there is. Like an AK-47. Good on the USMC for going practical, not quirky, based on some guru-d-jour sold them on.
It’s hard to argue with this. I’m surprised the Navy didn’t insist on a manual safety switch tho.

Nothing fits ANYONE'S hand like a 1911. It's the most ergonomically perfect pistol ever conceived.
Unfortunately, the 1911 is a sailboat in a powerboat world.
I’ve acquired a “harem” of handguns. I love them all. Black, Blue, Stainless, Chrome.. 9, 44, 45, 22.. S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Glock.
See I’m an equal opportunity firearm owner.
EDC -G19 well tuned up.
Good on yer 1911.
If you fast roped into Lower Slobova, lost your gear, and had to fight with the local G-s using their stuff and what you could find on the battlefield,
Yer 1911 would not be there. But a G-19 would.
So train the troops on them, not yer 1911, which might as well have a 1 digit serial number, and be made of pure unobtanium, residing in your house.
Agree ..... BTW got widget works hats, just waiting on the shirts . Stick with me .... I’m a procrastinating Texan but I’ll get em there .....:o)
I’ve got a few Glock 19’s and they are all Tenifer era finish. Good utility rigs for EDC.
Stay Safe Marine !
Don’t tell my 4 ft 11inch petite wife or her slightly taller mom this. The wife qualified with a government model .45 for her CDW permit and her mom as well when she became a CDW instructor.
Media must have the Glock 18.
LOL, Yup, gun threads excite him.
Thanks, bro!
We’ve settled on Springfield XD and variants here, although there’s a brace of stainless Kimbers in the safe. PM me your email again. Mrs. L and I did a Zombie Shoot at a local private gun club.
She picked up a Garand at the CMP booth and nailed 4 out of 5 at 100 yards standing. I’ll send you a video or two of her shooting. It was also the first time she fired my AR. Now she wants one...
File that under “good problem to have” right?
Check 6...

Nuthin’ to say other than howdy my buds.
