NYC considers adding facilities for addicts to use drugs under medical supervision
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS | September 28, | Erin Durkin

Posted on 09/28/2016 7:30:20 PM PDT by EinNYC

The city will study whether to set up sites for drug addicts to shoot up safely with $100,000 approved by the City Council Wednesday.

The controversial program known as supervised injection facilities gives addicts a place to use drugs under medical supervision to avoid overdoses or spreading HIV and other diseases.

The study, which will be done by the Health Department, “will assess the feasibility and impact of NYC having a program that provides a safe, clean haven to high-risk, vulnerable New Yorkers and will help prevent drug overdoses and disease transmissions,” said Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

The money comes from $5.6 million approved to fight AIDS in the current city budget.

If the city moved forward with injection sites, it would raise a host of issues including where to put the facilities and how to square them with federal anti-drug laws.

“We don’t have all the answers. It’s a study to take a look at all of that, and I’m glad we’re doing it,” Mark-Viverito said.

Supervised injection facilities are used in Europe and in Canada, but there are none in American cities. Boston recently announced plans for a facility for drug users to go after they’ve already gotten high.

Like we don't have crumbling infrastructure, garbage in the streets, crime, etc. Now we have to provide shooting galleries for druggie bums. You want to take illegal drugs, you roll your own dice. I resent paying for your drug junk.

This is one of the few times I will admit, I don’t know much about this problem. However, I do know, I wouldn’t wish to live next door to such a facility. I do know some folks take a very long time to withdrawal from using certain drugs, if they can do it at all. During that withdrawal, they may become ‘disruptive’.

“You want to take illegal drugs, you roll your own dice. I resent paying for your drug junk.”

We pay 10X more with the alternative.

An addict will steal your $2000 AC and sell it for $100 in scrap to buy $20 worth of drugs from a dealer. Or they’ll kill people over that $100.

It costs several times more to jail them than it would have to house, feed and dope them. Or they’ll end up in the hospital after a bad batch of dope and end up costing taxpayers a fortune.

I see them roaming and looking for things to steal or people to rob in NYC 24/7.

Free junk and a cot would keep these people from committing the insane crimes they do to get their uncontrollable fix. They’ll just stay indoors high as kites on medical-grade dope and leave everyone alone

If you serve them they will come - by the thousands.

Compassion run amok.

Talking about this on local radio. First responders now have Narcan which can counteract heroin. Problem is those who might kill themselves due to an overdose are revived only to use again. It has become a big strain on first responders who are treating the same people multiple times.

Oh no. A high school friend of mine got addicted to heroin on the Lower East Side, moved to London because they handed heroin out free, and died of an overdose at a very young age.

They are going to take the free one and then buy extra on the street. This does not solve the overdose problem but makes it worse.

Blasio does everything wrong.

My point is that you’re already paying for them. And paying more.

Through theft, killings, jail and hospitals

I understand your point!...Do you understand mine????

How about we set aside a few banks for bankrobbers to rob...Wouldn't that solve bank robberies???

(BTW...How many addicts are you personally sponsoring again?....See what I mean?)

Where do they live when they aren’t in the shooting gallery getting their daily fix?

We pay their welfare since they can’t earn for themselves.

Subsidized housing, food stamps, walking around money...

In Seattle they dabbled with a housing structure for “homeless” people to live in and remain drunk all day on the public dime.

drugs have no limit....tolerance is built quickly....

and you think these heroin addicts use only one drug?....they don't...they will sue meth, and weed, and whatever "legal" opiates they can get....

there is no end to their needs...

Put them next door (or better yet in the basement) of every councilman who votes for this nonsense. Also place the biggest one right in Deblasios neighborhood. Another liberal utopia.

Just let them overdose. Society does not need these weak specimens that drain the common good.
