This Labrador retriever sniffs out kiddie porn for cops
New York Post ^ | September 28, 2016 | Jamie Schram

Azzi added that teaching a dog how to sniff out kiddie porn on hard drives is no different than training them how to detect a rotting corpse.

“You isolate an odor,” Azzi said. “You’ve got to find the right dog for the job. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Ruger is Ohio’s first computer-sniffing dog and part of a small group of canines — fewer than two dozen — that do this type of work across the country, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Why “oh boy?” You’re OK with a pretext that’s laughable on it’s face because of revulsion over the accused crime? It will be turned against you eventually. Surely you understand this. If the law isn’t accountable under the law, then it’s what?

This is a poorly written story. It’s impossible for dogs to sniff out one kind of data on a hard drive, since data has no scent. What they seem to actually be doing is training dogs to sniff out flash drives, which could possibly contain porn.

The dogs are searching for devices, not content. They used the same technique to catch Jared:

The NY Post has become a ‘sensational’ tabloid; this kind of headline is its stock in trade...

They actually did that on an episode of “The Wire”:

No, but if you have enough reason to get a search warrant odds are that any hidden thumb drives will have porn.

Bingo. Perhaps the dogs are trained to spot pages that are stuck together.

Seizing evidence under a contrived and false pretense is wrong, regardless of how heinous the crime might be. If you accept nonsensical porn-sniffing dogs now, what will it be down the road that might be directed at you, being the deplorable that you are?

What is nonsensical about using a police dog to search? Pretty standard police procedure. What would you prefer? A Swedish bikini search team?

Or are you suggesting internet crimes like child abuse should not be investigated? You make no sense. As usual.

Misleading title. The dog can find electron storage devices, not child porn on said devices.

I think RC is believing that the perp is somehow tricked by being told that dogs can actually smell content on a drive.

This is no different from drug-sniffing dogs. Search warrant is presumed.

There are interrogator techniques that teach people to “read” people based on their personalities, then to watch for cues that show that they are lying.

A friend of mine who did lots of interrogations, and got lots of confessions, said they worked very well.

The dog is trained to alert on the smell of certain compunds that are common in USB “thumb drives” and other types of solid state memory. They don’t sniff for the digital contents at all.

"He sniffs out hidden thumb drives" That's possible, but there is no guarantee that there is porn on the hard drive.

No problem. It's a simple matter for the Federal agent who finds it to download some on there and collect his performance bonus.

It’s not just a misleading headline, the entire article maintains that these dogs smell porn on hard drives, which is impossible. They’re quoting police officers. If there’s a search warrant there’s no need for subterfuge.

‘My dog has no nose.’

‘Then how does it smell?’

‘Awful!’

Since Sept. 7, the cute black pooch has been assigned to a K-9 unit of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, using his snout to sniff out hard drives containing a chemical agent that leads them to child porn.

Ruger has been trained to alert police officers whenever he smells a certain chemical on the flash drive of computers.
