The Exorcist: The Television Series

Did anyone catch the premier of The Exorcist TV series this past Friday on Fox? I did and I was pleasantly surprised, despite the presence of Geena Davis in the cast.

Here are some helpful links about the show:

How do they make this into a series?

Re-possession?

Bullcrap voodoo exorcism baloney, zombies, crime scene TV, perverts, etc. is it really so impossible to make a decent TV show?
Would a western, or something decent and traditional be so unthinkable?

I watched it and enjoyed it. Plan to DVR it as long as it airs.

I saw it and enjoyed it. Having read the book, seen the original movie, and read something now and then about demonic infestation, I thought the episode was interesting. And frightening.

It seems less like a remake than something much ‘inspired’ by the original idea. Some of the characters and some of the plot tracks along the original lines but much is different.

I’ll give it a go for a few more episodes.

I also read the book and saw the original movie several times, plus the two sequels. The third one with George C. Scott was chilling to me. I’ve seen at least one or two documentaries about the original possession that Blatty based the book on. The movie Possession (2004) with Timothy Dalton and Christopher Plummer was another good movie...at least I thought so.

Is this going to be one long exorcism, or a demon-of-the-week type thing?

Is Geena Davis the Devil?

"...despite the presence of Geena Davis in the cast."

Geena Davis was something, back in the day:

Earth Girls are Easy (1988).

That was actually a parody movie on The Exorcist. I think it was called "Repossessed."

Linda Blair, Leslie Nielsen, and Ned Beatty were in that film. "Your mother sews socks in Hell." Great Line.

I watched the first ten minutes.

the main exorcist was arrogant and proud. I disliked him. Most missionary priests are down to earth guys and humble.

he refused medical help, whereas most exorcisms encourage a doctor present.

thecAmerican priest was a flacid good guy who was complimented at the back door on his sermon. This is not a catholic custom, partly because the priest is usually rushing to get ready for the next mass, and partly because catholic sermons are notoriously lousy, and for Catholics, the communion service is the important part of the service.

finally, supposedly the plot has the young priest asking the older priest for help. No, you need to go to the diocesan bishop for this, to get the protection of the church behind you.

true, some US exorcists got permission from parallel church bishops, but still there was a praying church behind their authority.

Did not see it, I hope to.

I’ll preface this by saying I’m sick of all the Catholic bashing I see in our culture, but I absolutely and completely refute the notion put forth (mainly by the entertainment culture) that only Catholic Priests can exorcise demons.

Firstly, a priest NEVER casts out demons, only our Lord is capable of that.

Secondly, I was raised in a Pentecostal church and I’ll tell you this: There is no demon born of Hell that wants to butt heads with some of the passionate souls I’ve seen in the church.....While I won’t say I’ve seen them “casting out demons”, I’ve seen some pretty scary things occur in the church that would make one lean that way.

I watched it last night. For a network TV show it seemed pretty good. I haven’t seen the original movie since I was a kid so i can’t make any comparisons. I do wonder how they will stretch it into a season (and 2 and 3 and so on). My other concern is often they pump alot of money into the pilot (which was probably what was shown last night), so it almost has a ‘movie’ feel to it, but then subsequent episodes drop in quality and revert to the more ‘TV’ feel.

  1. What do you think the movie's weak points are?
  2. What do you think of Friedkin's work overall?

It’s ultra crude and obvious. I like Friedkin in stripped down genre mode. The best film he’s ever made is Bug!
