I love stories like that. There are some songs that stay with you forever simply because of some unusual circumstances when you heard them.

Diana, I look to a more innocent time in America. You know, the one the forces of Satan said we can never go back to? I say we can, even if we have to unilaterally reclaim our heritage, consequences be hanged.

Awesome list ... but how did you overlook THIS one?

Gordon Lightfoot -- The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (November 10, 1975 shipwreck on Lake Superior)

One of the most haunting songs you'll hear.

The Hymn to Red October

In October, in October,
We reported our victories
In October, in October,
Our forefathers brought forth
A new world.

Could this be a reference to the Battle of Yorktown in October, 1781?

Very believable that it was written for Tom Petty. It’s easy to imagine his voice in the chorus and Mike Campbell doing the guitar parts.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald

I saw that church when I attended the Republican National Convention in 1980.

I’ve been to the lighthouse on Whitefish Point, and I’ve traveled all over Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario around Lake Superior, but I’ve never been to that church. I should put it on my “bucket list,” for sure.
