Vets warn people against buying 'flat-faced' dogs
BBC News ^ | 21 September 2016

Vets are warning would-be dog owners to think twice before buying breeds with fashionably "flat-faced" features because of concerns over their welfare.

Pugs, bulldogs, French bulldogs and shih-tzus have become sought-after in the UK, despite wide-ranging health problems.

Their appeal is attributed to having "squashed" faces and wrinkled noses.

Looking at the photo, I knew it was your post ;)

Looks like he’s laying on a blanket made from Sharpei hides.

What is it with the little squeaky dogs that act nuts all the time?

I'm tempted to let my Lab just turn and use them for a chew toy whenever they start yapping and snarling and being aggressive as we walk by.

You bet they are.......we have 2 at the present.......have had English Bulldogs (3) in the past. They are high maintenance dogs for breathing problems. They MUST be kept inside and I’ve seen very active Bulldogs but ours weren’t. We’ve heard and can attest to the fact that most English Bullies are the lazy man’s dog.......and I can tell you some Pugs (ours) sure are........lol. For the pleasure they give they’re worth the best care available........;)

In breeding? Remember Irish Setter and Dalmatian crass?

That’s how we picked our dog. She just went over to my husband and was really sweet with him.

She’s a little poodle mix, and she was so scrawny when we got her. Now shes really cute, and she’s been the sweetest dog. She was my first dog, and I love her.

I’m a terrier man and currently have Yorkies. For some reason, women decided that flat-faced, microscopic Yorkies are cute and unscrupulous breeders started breeding for these features.

The bad breeding and lack of snout makes them high risk for health problems.

We fly with our chocolate lab. Airlines won’t let you fly with certain flat-faced dogs. This only applies to those dogs that are too big for the cabin.

All the pure breeds have serious health problems. Interbreeding is bad, just look at he royal family.

My last mini doxie had seizures, which is not atypical for them. But I handled her from a pup her whole life with the knowledge of their bad backs. She gave herself a little back pop once, but it went away. Other than that, her back was perfectly fine.

Flat-faced, perpetually snorting to catch a breath, and slobber-prone is no way to go through life.

Yeah, but I married her anyway. Sigh.

My daughter has 2 very independent ones. They’re good dogs and great with the babies.

Isn't that awesome? Our 5 children are all adults now. When the last one left she left me her dog. They had been really close but dtr was truly unable to take her. So I told everyone that the dog and I grew into crochety old women together.

We had to have her put down about 6 years ago. Took me another year to be ready to get another. When we were ready husband told me to go online, look at shelters and find a few dogs I liked and then we'd set and day to go choose one. I did as he suggested and one cold rainy November day we went.

The first shelter we visited tbere was a dog who came right to the fence to greet me first thing. She wasn't on my list. Husband is very organised. We looked at the 3 dogs on the "list" from that shelter and he fell in love with one of them. I was so sad and I asked to see the dog who greeted me anyway, messing up Mr. Husband-the-organized. We did not leave with a dog that day, we came home to discus which one we'd get. After 2 days I was very surprised when the lady from the shelter called to see if we'd made a decision and my sweet husband said we would take both. So we don't have the kids at home anymore but we have "his and hers" dogs :-)

Flat faced dogs are really good for business. Who the hell are these veterinarians that are advocating this?

LOL. The riding crop is a nice touch.

When we lived in Atlanta, we fostered a huge dobe, Luther, who had a favorite fleece blankie. He would mound it up into a point and suck on it like a nipple. Funniest dam thing. Would have kept him in a heartbeat if he hadn’t tried to eat the cats every chance that came along. :/

Used the "pointer method" to train him and responds to anything like a pointer...even a pencil.

Little kids think he's "magical" and I'm using a "wand" on him. They're genetically prone to sucking and usually, it's their own flank.

Thankfully, she sucks her binkie, instead.

"Magic Dog"

The crop is part of a Halloween costume.

He ate the leather flap off the end. :D

For whatever weird reason, half my post was gone.

Should have said that Seven, my female Dobe, is the binkie sucker.
