Telegraph (UK) ^ | 9/19/16 | Robert Midgley

A woman who rang Barnstaple Police in Devon was left stumped after being put through to an officer in Barnstable, Massachusetts in the US.

The woman, who's identity is unknown, reported a car accident between Muddiford and Ilfracombe in the UK.

But the confused US officer on the other end of the phone struggled to work out where she was talking about, asking for nearby landmarks.

Eventually the woman realised something was wrong when the officer hadn't heard of Ilfracombe.

The police officer finally worked out what the problem was.

The woman was referring to Barnstaple, England - and he was in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

After explaining that he is in the US, the officer told her: "Our response is going to be about six hours."

The pair shared a laugh before saying their goodbyes.

Teaticket’s that area on Route 28 in Southeast Falmouth. I used to go flounder fishing off the bridge on Great Pond on Manhunt road.

Man I caught a lot of fish there! You had to be there when the tide was coming in; from the bridge, you could actually see them coming up the pond in hundreds. Mostly dinner plate and larger size. Biggest one I caught was the size of a turkey platter and about 20 pounds.

AND, to complicate matters, the towns of Yarmouth, Falmouth, Dover, Weymouth, Boston, Barnstable, Ipswich, Chelsea, Bolton, and many more have their American counterparts in Massachusetts.

And a number of these also have towns in Canada with the same names.

Very interesting! That was one big flounder. Also, thanks for the info. It must be a small, quiet place.

Umm..

What’s with the phone infrastructure o’er there that makes this mistake possible? Hard to imagine this happening on most hard-wired phone lines. Siri (or her GooGle counterpart) screw up on her ‘Siri, call the Barnstaple police’ voice dial?

;-)

It does appear to affect the 999 system from time to time.
We test the 999 link Between our phone network and the national network every Wednesday (requires a code), (old fashioned requirement never cancelled), the lady in NYC is not a total stranger....
All our phone area codes start 01, put this in by accident then 999 .....+1 999 it’s got to go somewhere. :)

Yes, wrong database.

She got a cheaper iPhone on her US trip so she didn't have to pay the VAT tax in the UK...:^)

Or perhaps she dialed 911 instead of 999?
