Reminds me of the Willie Horton story from the 1988 presidential campaign. The Bush campaign took all kinds of grief for running ads about Horton and hammering Michael Dukakis with it, but it was Democratic candidate Al Gore who first brought public scrutiny to the issue during the primaries.
