You could get by OK in most of the southeastern US outside major cities on less than $50K a year. Tax situation varies state to state, don’t be fooled into believing that states with no income tax are necessarily cheaper. While some states are cheaper than others, every state gets their pound of flesh somehow. In Texas, for instance, it’s New Jersey level property tax rates. Do your homework before deciding to make a move. Suffice it to say, I suspect the overall tax burden would be lower anywhere in the southeastern US than where you are now.
I will most assuredly keep everyone posted.
I really appreciate all the input I’ve had tonight, and this is why I love Free Republic heh.
In most places home prices are pretty reasonable here.
I live in the Big Nothing, between Ft. Worth & Lubbock. Some oil play, but nothing like Midland/Odessa.
Have a Petroleum Engineer relative who has lived in Midland for long long time. He is very well know there. Ran consulting company, but has interests of his own. He was still working until recently, well up in his 80’s. If you get a lead, let me know and I’ll see if he knows anyone who might help.
I have no personal connections in that industry.
Also check gun import regs. I know we can’t take guns north, not sure whether you can bring yours south.
I suppose I can see what they can do. I’d like to distance myself when I can. I was told by a manager the other day that he doesn’t believe in assigning genders, and Clinton is that last best hope for the US. Needless to say, I vehemently opposed those thoughts.
It’s been a bit quiet for me because we lost some projects, and I’m a foreman/maintenance guy, so they don’t often put me under others, they’d rather I run men. I actually prefer going out alone and just fixing and troubleshooting, but sometimes you get stuck with apprentices heh.
Thanks, I’ll check that out too.
I do hear they’re more liberal there, but perhaps this in a more conservative area.
“some of the oil and gas producing areas of Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, etc., would be good places to go.” — BBW’s suggestion makes sense to me too.
I would recommend checking opportunities in those places, including going for interviews — the would be employers could give you more info and help in actually moving and getting permission to work in the US. Once you are here, then you would be able to find out more on how to make your move permanent, such as becoming a permanent resident.
What skills does your wife have. If she has any medical qualification then have her apply and come in as her spouse.
Is it overrun with illegals? heh
No state income tax is nice, but I hear property taxes are higher as a result.
Open carry and conceal carry no problem though?
I have some I would want to bring.
I can’t part with some of them, I’m too attached heh.
I’ll look into that.
Thanks again TF.
One thing I’m looking forward to, is driving around and meeting some FReepers, when I’m able to move, that will be a good way to see the country.
She’s a registered dental assistant.
I’d have to be sure they know where I’m from before I came for an interview with anyone to ensure we’re not wasting each others time.
The Springs is a conservative area, you can bring you arms (30 round mags are a problem) and there’s work.
We can’t have 30 round mags here, so they have to be pinned. It’s ridiculous.
I will definitely look into that area as well. You’ve all given a lot of info, so I’m sure I’ll lots to research now heh.
Staying out of the cities sounds good to me. I’m used to owing acreages and commuting up to 30 mins for work, so I’m hoping to be able to do something similar somewhere.
I’ll probably die. I’ll probably have to change the A/C coolant in my truck daily.
I’m sure a man would adapt over a bit of time.
I’ve been to some hot places overseas wearing a lot of body armour and gear.
I did commercial HVAC/automation in the Denver metro area. That sort of work is busy. You’d like the Springs area better.
Chattanooga TN. Electricians and electronic technicians in manufacturing are always needed.
Auto industry and manufacturing are growing
