Why Are Ferraris the Most Collectible Supercar?
Real Clear Life ^ | 12 Sep, 2016

Aston Martin has been making sportscars for longer, Porsche has won Le Mans more times, Lamborghini is credited with inventing the concept of the supercar, and Mercedes-Benz is credited with inventing the car itself. Yet when it comes to classic car desirability, nothing tops Ferrari.

Of the 10 most expensive cars ever to fall under the auctioneer’s hammer, nine are Ferraris. In fact, cars carrying the prancing horse badge make up 22 of the top 30.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is currently the most expensive car ever sold at auction going under the hammer for $38 million in 2015. (Adrian Dennis/AFP)

For comparison, the best Aston can manage is a DB4 GT Zagato in 16th place, while there is not a single Lamborghini in the current top 100.

But why does Ferrari create such a frenzy? “They are the longest standing and most consistent racing manufacturer,” says James Cottingham. “I’m not surprised at how important the Ferrari brand has become in the classic car market.”

I’m iPhone impaired, so can’t link, but did you see the CBC Sunday Morning 9/11 piece on Italian post war one offs?

Incredible beautiful autos! They’re on you tube. Also Velocity’s Channel featured a georgeous Ferrari one off on “Chasing Cars” last week, that went to auction and a bid of 25.4 million that didn’t make the reserve!

I guess Ferrari’s are just beautiful and do great on the track!

(Used to go to the F1 at Watkins Glen in late 60’s, with night before pit passes. Team Ferrari was tuning racers up to ten grand rpm, then cut off power. With their small fly wheel it was scream to silence in about two seconds.). Ah, memories!

It is not an accident that the 250GTO looks a lot like the 240Z. So much so that there was a rather good kit in the early 90’s to make a 240Z look like one. The company was of course shut down.

That was my thought. Ferrari has an X-factor when it comes to beauty.

I was impressed myself. It was a live event and the cars were being pulled by hand with straps.

Owners driving and having fun.

Watched a bit last night. The owner of the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero was awesome.

36in tire to top.

Never owned one. But I can vouch for their 4.2 V8s. My little project has one in it.

I bought an Alfa 4C Spider four weeks ago, it rocks. Carbon fiber monocoque ,hand built.Love the car and don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it, Jeremy Clarkson referred to it as a “ puppy Ferrari”, and I think that a very apt description. Had a bad hankering for a GTV 6 when I was younger, just couldn’t get the deal done.

While I don't have the '59 Volvo PV544 I was driving then, I am still married to the same wife.

We are cut from similar cloth...we recently celebrated 44 years together and I cobbled a '64 PV544 together from a package deal of three. It was my primary vehicle while in grad school and a few years after.

We now return you to the proper Ferrari discussion!

I just read up on the specs. It's nice to see what they are up to. Sounds like a fun and very capable car! I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my Alfas back in the day.
