A police department in Ohio has shared on Facebook disturbing photos of a man and woman passed out in a car with a toddler in the backseat after the pair had allegedly overdosed on heroin.

I’m a little fuzzy on the proper reaction to opioids. If being unconscious is an overdose, what happens when it’s not an overdose?

Unfortunately, this subject hits close to home for me. I have spoke with doctors, addiction counselors and law enforcement. I have attended many meetings and speeches.

This is what I have found out.

1.) You can become addicted after using only once.

2.) Fighting the addiction is a losing battle. Heroin addiction alters the brain and is unlike any other drug or alcohol addiction.

3.) It is being actively marketed to white, mostly males....not blacks or Hispanics. Hmmm, think about that.

4.) Heroin supply has increased since marijuana has become legal in several states. Cartels have switched to a new product. A product that is much easier to ship.

5.) Heroin is cheap and plentiful. Users resort to petty crimes to support their habit. Shoplifting, breaking in cars, etc. Law enforcement told me about one couple who would break into homes and take small items, jewelry, change etc. Leave home neat and orderly. Owner would never know someone was there until they went to put on grandma’s necklace and it was gone.

Federal government has done little to address this problem, even though it has progressively gotten worse. No public service announcements. No “just say no” campaign. No information supplied to school children.

The current president released non-violent drug offenders. Victimless crime my ass!

Law enforcement now travels with narcan so they can save these junkies to die another day.

And yet, my 80 year old mother has to beg her doctor for pain pills.

“Drugs. Blame the drugs. Without them, those people would be upstanding citizens, and the kid would be in good hands. The government should pass laws to make drugs illegal; at worst, get the drug users to register their drugs. Those 2 people aren’t responsible for their actions; drugs are the problem. We need stiff drug regulations.”

How about blaming both drugs AND its users. There is no constitutional protection for heroin. Jail these bastards. Jail the dealers. Jail the growers. And bomb Afghanistan into oblivion. Instead, the taxpayers are subsidizing the Afghan poppy growing barbarians.

And the real reason AA and offshoots into every area of addiction isn’t gangbusters today?

IT LEFT ITS FIRST LOVE.

This was an explicitly RELIGIOUS program focused on JESUS CHRIST.

Today, only a handful of churches carry it on in that fashion.

People were misled with the idea that there can be any “higher power” you pick carrying it on. That’s just an alias for one’s own pride and is incapable of true love.

Yes, the people who legitimately have need of legal pain meds are really getting screwed in all this. Just the other day my doctor said that now the CDC is getting involved and is pushing for more control over doctors. They want to start limiting pain meds in some way to just cancer patients, that is, people with chronic pain that isn’t cancer related are going to be severely limited or cut off. I suspect that many will then start seeking out heroin or other black market substances.

The Fed clampdown on opioid prescriptions fuels the heroin trade. But thank God we’re making sure doctors aren’t over-prescribing this stuff.

Your statement is a non sequitur, sagar.

There is no Constitutional protection for tobacco, turnips, or corn, or coffee, either.

Until the 18th Amendment to the Constitution (later repealed by the 21st Amendment), there was no mention of the word "alcohol" in the Constitution, either.

The Constitution is intended to limit the powers of Big Government (which the Founding Fathers recognized was a necessary evil), by exactly circumscribing its powers.

So, unless something is explicitly prohibited, it's allowed under the Constitution.

Article IX: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Article X: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Didn't you ever take Civics in high school?

You mean, the street dealers are being coached to focus on the target group of White males?

Is that what they are being taught in their marketing seminars?

Have you seen the PowerPoint slides they show at their Las Vegas venues proving that?

Overprescribing prescription opiates has contributed to the problem but it’s more complex than that. The border needs to be secured, the illicit supply needs to be cut off, and the system abusers all need to become acquainted with withdrawl and/or jail.

mexico? i dont get it.

The heroin trade boomed under the Mafia with the plants grown in turkey and processed in Sicily.

The French Connection did’t involve one mexican.

open borders allow tons to come in and mexico is the source of a lot of ills, but blaming our heroin epidemic on mexico is a STRETCH.
