The man could sing.

Just heard this great song listening online and thought I'd post it for all to enjoy.

He was an amazing musician, and his daughter could sing her heart out as well.

as great a singer as he was, there are many who said his jazz piano skills were even better. Super talent, in any regard!

He's ok. Nice for an evening at home with a book.

Doris Day does an excellent version of this song. I was surprised at how soulful she sounded. Of course, Nat was the ultimate in romantic crooners. I also liked his version of ‘The Very Thought of You’. He could have spoken than song vs singing it, and I still would have been taken in by his clear pronunciation, baritone verging on tenor, and dulcet tones.

The man could sing.

He could play a pretty mean piano, as well.

My favorite singer. To me, what makes his voice perfect is that it isn’t perfect. That slightly gravelly sound gives it such feeling.

Funny story. He moved into my neighborhood of LA somewhere around 1950 (to the best of my knowledge as I wasn’t alive at the time), and it caused quite a stir since at the time the neighborhood was all white. Some of the neighbors raised quite a stink with one confronting him by saying something to the effect:

“We don’t want any undesirable people around here.”

Nat’s response (paraphrased)?

“You know, I don’t either. If I see any, I’ll be the first to let you know.”

His voice was chemically enhanced.
Before a session he would smoke a half pack of cigarettes to give his voice "tooth" which is that gravelly effect you mention. Not surprisingly, he died of lung cancer.
