Best small show I ever saw was INXS impromptu with Bowie at the China Club NYC in 84 I think.....they did Route 66 and the blew the roof off

I saw the Who the same year you did (1980). My dad (an ortho surgeon) came home after work in and asked me if I knew who Pete Townshend was. (I was 16). I shook my head yes. He said "he just gave me these." ....2 tickets to the Who at the L.A. Sports Arena, for THAT night. Pete had been in my dad's office earlier in the day to get a bone in his wrist set and a soft cast put on. The night before he'd apparently gone Kung Fu in a hotel room somewhere. Right hand/wrist, so he could still play guitar. Here's a pic of him from that tour with the cast:

One of the best small-venue shows I ever saw was an impromptu at the Palomino Club, Feb. of '87. Taj Mahal headlined, but Dylan, George Harrison, and John Fogerty were in the crowd and Taj eventually coaxed them up onstage. Played another hour with them.

Buddy Guy with Junior Wells at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz in '86 was another amazing blues show.
