Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson have been slimed.

A mysterious black slime has been steadily oozing over Washington DC's most famous monuments, including the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

The Jefferson Memorial's white marble dome is slowly turning gray from the icky substance, which is called biofilm, and not actually a slime, but more of a powder, reports CBS News.

The black stuff has also creeped over the Arlington National Cemetery and on the Washington Monument and the tombstones at Congressional Cemetery, according to NPS.gov.

I think the capital should be closer to the middle of the country. It is time to shut down the Beltway and make people really look at the USA.

I make trips to DC all the time for work and when I do, I drive by the Jefferson Memorial daily. I’ve noticed the dome looking grungy and I’ve been scratching my head trying to decide if it always looked that way or if it’s a new thing. I had decided new but couldn’t figure out how it got so dirty. So now I know.

It’s Baudoinia compniacensis, which typically grows around distilleries, feeding off of the fumes. The recent spread of it to other areas suggests that conditions changed creating conditions to feed it. Ethanol fuel?
