My F'n Optimum Internet Service is like Electricity in Yugoslavia
Aug 21, 2016 | ML/NJ (Complete Vanity !)

Posted on 08/21/2016 11:12:53 AM PDT by ml/nj

Well, my Internet "Service" must be back on or I wouldn't be able to post this.

I pay nearly $200 a month for Internet/Phone/Cable to Optimum/Cablevison a month. Ans sometimes it works. It reminds me of the stories I used to here from folks at a worksite in Yugoslavia. The electricity there was on from about 1 PM to 4 PM almost daily.

I tried to call Optimum Friday night to complain when my Internet (and phone) went out. Fifteen minutes of annoying PRESS ONE FOR ENGLISH, ENTER YOUR PHONE NUMBER FOLLOWED BY THE POUND SIGN, WOULD YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO A COMMERCIAL ABOUT OUR GREAT SERVICES, I SEE YOU'RE NOT CALLING FROM A PHONE IN OUR RECORDS, (Hey stupid! The phone in your records doesn't work because your service sucks!) and so on until I got to a human.

Well, a sort of human, because it's obvious to me that he doesn't give a sh*t about my situation. He'll give me a credit for an hour because I didn't call the previous three days when the service was also spotty. (I'm not sure whether an hour amounts to a dollar or more as I start swearing at him. I asked for a direct number to bypass the Eventually I just hung up which I'm sure what these guys want.)

Some will suggest that I switch. I'm a pretty lazy guy. These Optimum/Cablevision folks treat me like the proverbial frog in hot to boiling water. The used to charge under $80 a month for the same thing a few years ago. Now like I say, it's nearly $200. I told my wife who's always looking to save money (I'm not. I just want it to work.) to look into switching to Verizon. This morning when I came down to breakfast there was an article waiting for me about some guy's travails with Verizon.

Arrrgh!

Do you know the nature of your outage?

You should always buy your own equipment for inside your home(modem and router). Rental fees will be recovered inside of a year.

I’ve seen many times where people upgrade their speed to see no effect because the modem inside the home cannot accommodate the additional channels. Those combination Modem/Router/WIFI products aren’t worth it at all.

Obviously you’ve not heard of CenturyLink (CenturyStink). It makes your service seem like the best there is.

Had Verizon. Prices just kept going up up up.

Internet only, too !.

Switched to Optimum, much cheaper.

Internet is not as good.

Now we got Verizon begging us to come back for $50 bucks a month. Just a matter of time now

I had the same type problems with Time Warner cable. I switched to Verizon when FIOS became available. All of my services now work like a charm. No more cable TV outages and internet and phone are always working and internet is super fast. Been working great now for over a year. TW cable couldn’t do that for even a few days without outages and other problems.

Verizon has since sold it’s service to Frontier in my area and they’ve been running it for a few months now. Still having no problems. My service for TV, phone and internet is about $190 a month.

If you can get FIOS in your area then switch, you won’t regret it.

The problem switching from cable internet to mobile internet is the amount of data you use.

I have the mid-level cable Internet. I get 350gb of data. My brother lives in the country, so mobile is all he can get and they give him about 10gb of data.

If you use Netflix or similar to stream videos — movies, sports, etc. — they will each up your data amount.

I checked my usage a couple of months ago. Six months earlier, I was using only about 90gb per month. Suddenly, I noticed my previous month had actually used up the entire 350gb. The next month was almost at the limit. I began checking everything I had connected. The main culprit seemed to be a FoxSports app which apparently streamed games in SuperHD. I changed to a different viewing method and my data usage dropped by nearly two-thirds.

DSL is an option locally, but the phone company requires landline phone service, too. I went to Tracfone years ago because the landline phone service was nearing $30/month just for local calls and I make very few phone calls.

Verizon is the same way. I have only internet and phone. I don’t want cable TV. My bill went from $65 to $120. I called and after the stupid auto attendant garbage I get to a young lady who told me that the promo deal is $80 a month. Great, I’ll take it.

But, in order to get it, I need to cancel my service. Someone will come out and take my router and in about two weeks, come back and re-install it.

“Well, isn’t that just a little bit stupid?” I asked.

I finally got a manager who hooked me for $90 a month.

Yesterday, I called back and got an automated survey with my chance to tell them my opinion.

“I’m not impressed with your service, but I absolutely hate having my intelligence insulted by having to talk to a dumb robot instead of a human being who can actually answer my actual question instead of your programed answer. Try treating your customers like customers and having real live humans do their jobs and answer the phone.”

Well, they asked.

Have to have a landline for many reasons, including for my own business so got Vonage. Pay $12 a month which includes unlimited long distance calls - we make a lot of these. Of course, when the internet is down (which is rare but it does happen) we don’t have access but we can use our cell phones to access messages and when the internet is back up we get all of them via email. Combination works for us.

One of the things that we can do which has proved invaluable lately is that we can block up to 100 different numbers. Had a lot of spam calls lately so that helps a bunch.

I don’t have a phone that connects to the internet, so I don’t have to worry about that. I have Verizon as my cell phone provider, and have never had a problem making calls. I’ve had Time Warner cable and their Road Runner service since it came to my area. I also have their digital phone service. For my cable (with Starz), DVR, modem, internet and phone service, my bill is about $204 each month. The internet I use on my two computers, plus live streaming via a Roku. I don’t have any complaints about the service or speeds I’ve been getting. My youngest son lives in Indianapolis, In. and has had AT&T for his internet connection since he moved there two years ago. I have no idea what type of service or speeds he gets. I believe he uses his internet for his computer, and subscribes to Playstation Vue (Playstation Network) for his TV programs which costs about $45 a month. He gets about 100 channels. His AT&T internet bill runs about $65 a month.

I have Optimum/Cable Vision here in New Jersey and never had a problem

They don’t rent the modems, you get one, they just upgraded mine last year and no charge. And replaced my cable box when it died last spring. I can’t complain. I have had Comcast, and they are the worst possible company on the planet. It is like they purposely strive to be the worst

I doubt anyone there cares what your opinion is. They just want to make you feel that they do. It's sort of like all those bulk mailings from the RNC telling me how they want my opinion on the issues (and BTW, a donation).
