The Very First Shelby Cobra Just Sold For A Staggering Record $13.75 Million

The Monterey Car Week auctions are where the beautiful members of the landed gentry go to blow obscene amounts of money on cars, and at yesterday’s RM Sotheby’s auction, one of them took Cobramania to new heights. This 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra known as the CSX 2000 just commanded $13.75 million at auction.

...

RM Sotheby’s has a ton of detailed information on this legendary car, but it is notable for being the very first Shelby Cobra. It arrived in the U.S. without a motor in February 1962, and Carroll Shelby and his partner Dean Moon then threw in a 260 cubic inch V8 and a Ford four-speed gearbox.

Here’s what Moon had to say at the time:

“We got drunk and drove it around—an impromptu road course we had set up between the oil derricks. When it didn’t break, even after all that rough treatment, well, then we knew we had a good car.”

Classic. After building the CSX 2000 on “a shoestring,” Shelby was able to get capital from Ford itself to build the first group of Cobras.

I sure hope it wasn’t the Walmart family who bought it.
They already own GT40 1075 and I think the ‘66 LaMans winner.

No fool has that kind of money

I can't wait to see the money that'll change hands when the surviving '68 Bullitt Mustang finally resurfaces.

I stopped bidding at 12 million.

Thanks a lot for running up the price on me. Oh well, it will look good under my double-wide overhang.

That would be insane but I think that car was scrapped. It was torn up pretty bad and my bet is the studios just sold it for junk.I bet the shock towers were busted all to hell from all the jumping It was not a collector car back then.Just another mustang.

I’ll keep my Honda S2000!

I loved mine but had to get rid of it when back surgery prevented my wife from climbing in and getting out.

So the buyer doesn’t have to pay sales tax on this multimillion-dollar purchase?

There were two 390 GT Fastbacks purchased for Bullitt. One was damaged by the jump scenes, but the other was sold by the studio back when it was "just another Mustang". IIRC, the two cars were similarly modified and the second one was used to record some of the driving sounds that were dubbed into he chase scene. So, someone out there may be sitting on a gold mine. There was even an episode of Blue Bloods last season that made reference to the car. Urban legend? I hope not.

I have a replica with a 428 engine from back in the day - it’s a toy - it’s stupid fast and a lot of fun to drive.

Of course, it’s also very impractical, but what the hey - life is short.
