eastern ky = WV
I just got a sort of “bad” impression of Kentucky; like
the impression that there a lot of storms there. Also,
there are the annoying TOLL ROADS which pop up too often;
and you have to be sure to carry change with you. For me;
too many storms and too many toll roads. I’ve already paid
taxes for ROADS!!
The Old Kentucky Home was nice; also the taverns that serve
Hot Brown, which I did not care for actually.
Momma & I were riding around the roads near Lexington; a
storm came up suddenly. Then a little bird hopped out on
the road right in the path of our car. I hit it; and its
little mate just stood there chirping and chirping at me;
cussing me out! Poor little thing. I felt like a sheep-
killing dog!
We stayed at a nice hotel; but the weather was very bad all
night. Momma slept good; but I didn’t. - So, Kentucky sort
of is not one of my favorite places; through no fault of its
own really.
There were other things; but I won’t harp on it. :o(
Tennessee is generally better to me. (Driving in
Lexington, KY was like trying to drive in New York City!)
It is just that. As soon as a Republican tries to address that the Rats in the state legislature block it.
Thanks for the input there - My father is moving to Johnson City and I know quite a few people who also moved into this area and they nothing but good things.
If he’s down there then that means I can be there too if things get bad for one reason or another. TN Vaccine laws state that I need a religious exemption, and the affidavit contains “I understand that I am putting my child at risk (sic)”
TN is a consideration but Kentucky is still higher on our list.
If I find something about KY that bumps it off then TN is next to review.
We’re also considering IN and VA/WV as places.
I think Cuban Leaf turned into Mr. Douglas.
In any event, Mr. Douglas is flying a Ky flag.

There is no state income tax in TN. Only sales and property taxes.

Having grown up in Massachusetts and spent 6 months at Fort Knox (long,long ago) all I can say is that I don’t have a particularly positive opinion of Kentucky.But I freely admit that that could be the Army’s fault,not Kentucky’s.
Yeah, I have been out east a number of times and was always mystified by some of the iiquor sales laws.
I used to have family in South Carolina and traveled down there often. My route took me through eastern Kentucky and Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Even though I was just passing through, I liked the people I encountered along the way, and think of that area as definitely God’s country.
Oh Just a word to everyone out there with the TN recommendation:
Homeschooling in TN is just like PA. We have to register with the district, and we have to teach their curriculum. Also, we would have to prove ourselves to be qualified to teach (With a degree or certification) and we would need to submit immunization records to the district.
So it meets none of my requirements. It’s a nice state though.
Johnson City can get steamy hot in the summer - the mountains block the breeze. Holston valley to the west might be a bit more pleasant. Or perhaps north up toward Bristol. And if you ever need to run, you can get to KY, VA or NC pretty quickly.
Louisville is a great town for a lot of things. I really like it - but I don’t live there. But it and Jefferson County are leftist strongholds. Lexington / Fayette County OTOH is a city that is just typical urban sprawl, nothing to offer IMO.
But the central/north central areas are very nice. And the seasons are also.
Also, you can get some nice big tracts of land in Henry County (east of L-ville) cheap and still be able to commute to L-ville easy. If I had $150k to spare I’d be setting up my estate there right now.
Johnson City is attracting a lot of progressives (university is the reason)...better off staying rural in East TN.
Ohio seems to meet your specifics and may be a better fit for you.
You might want to look at east Texas - say between Athens, Lufkin and Shreveport, LA. Homeschooling laws are generally more friendly than in Kentucky. The terrain isn’t quite as pretty. I’ve not seen the vaccination affidavit form; I don’t know if it is required for home schooling. Real estate taxes are high (mostly for schools, of course) but it’s offset by no income tax. First registration of the car will be high, but subsequent years are fairly cheap.

Very clannish. Very suspicious of outsiders. A handful of families are extremely influential in local politics. Suing other people — especially anyone with a deep pocket or insurance — is the main occupation there; it is a real cottage industry.

Ohio, on paper, is a great place. Astronauts are made in OH and that is my goal for my daughter. My problem is that everytime I go to Ohio (Which is pretty often actually) I have been attacked, assaulted, hit, scammed, robbed or carjacked (Attempted).
Everytime I go into Ohio it’s a new tale of misery and assault. There are parts of it that are nice though. In pictures. When I go to these parts I have someone dropping cinder blocks off an overpass onto me, people trying to steal my wallet or smash out my windows. I even got robbed by a toll booth attendant out there once.
I really don’t like Texas. Texas is too big of a place to ever say “I hate that state” but Austin is liberal hell, and I’ve never met a Texan who didn’t try to con me.
I’ve had 2 business partners from out there and they stole everything and ran. “down home boys” too who were suspicious of me being from the NY area.
Every interaction I’ve had with a Texan has ended up disastrously. I’m not a fan.
But like I said, Texas is too big of a place to ever have a single opinion of it. I like the idea that Texas is talking about seceding though. With their dedicated power grid and expanse it’s a great idea.
I understand that Water can be issue there as well. The terrain is nothing that I am looking for except up by Arkansas. But Texas is on the list, regardless of my run-ins with it’s natives.
Berea, while not exactly eastern, would be a little different, though it's full of a bunch of wannabe hipsters with a mountain edge. For someone from the east coast, it would be tough to deal with.
Tennessee, for some reason, offers a better atmosphere.
